Is there something wrong with my kitten?

Asked by cliofaye (405points) August 23rd, 2011

My kitten is only a few months old and she’s usually either really playful or really wants to cuddle but she hasn’t been as active today and I was looking at her earlier and notice one side of her face was chubby and the other was not. What do I do? My godparents are taking her to the vet this week but what do I do until then?

It sounds like she may have been bitten by something or eaten something that has caused an allergic reaction or she may have ingested poison.

You might want to call this 24/7 emergency animal poisoning hotline and just ask them some questions. Here is the number and the website.

Are there any bees around your house or yard? Do you know if the kitten could have accidentally gotten into anything (poison, people food, chemicals, even chocolate or certain house plants can cause problems for pets)

Go online and see if there is a 24 hour emergency veterinarian in your area and call them up and let them know the kitten’s symptoms and get their advice on whether you should bring her in.

Will she let you run a pinky finger along her gum lines? Check for a swelling as it could be a piece of food cut her, lodged awkwardly between teeth or a bad tooth.

Ants, mosquitos, spiders and flying stingy bugs could have gotten her just as @Kardamom said.

Is th swollen part of her face hot to touch in comparison to the other side? Does she paw or try to wash that side?

@Neizvestnaya It’s not on her jawline it’s all along the side of her face. She acts like it’s not there.

Reminds me of my brother’s dog, she seemed to not be bothered by it, turned out to be a bacterial infection.

Sounds like she should go to the vet tomorrow. Is it painful to her if you touch it? It could be an abscess from a fight with another cat maybe? Is she an outdoor cat?

I am guessing bit or sting. They swell but many times they are not bothersome after awhile. I would suggest getting a little more expert advice though, so calling a vet or something might be a good idea.

Abscess or infection are the usual causes for facial swelling of small mammals in my home.

Will you let us know what the vet discovers? Hope the kitty is ok.

@Neizvestnaya I’m taking her to the vet this week but the bulge has gone down mostly

@cliofaye: That’s good! Hopefully a little bug bite is to blame.
