Can you help me with Splinter removal ideas?

Asked by tan235 (877points) August 25th, 2011

Ok so I had a previous post about a splinter I’ve had for 4 months, my doctor was useless, I paid her 80 for her to say ‘you’ll have to have an x-ray, but you can’t because your pregnant’
I asked her how else I could get it out and she said she doesn’t know.
She gave me a pediatrists number, she said if it’s not infected by 4 months it’s unlikely to become infected and I should just deal with it.
However, it’s driving me insane, I can’t see anything, there is no scar tissue, no lump, no minimal amount of pus or anything, I’m thinking it’s glass.
So what can I do?!
I can’t use salve – pregnant…. I’ve tried soaking.
Anyone have any ideas?
Much Appreciated, sorry for the repetitive questions…

Do not apply pressure!! If it’s sharp glass, you could be inserting it further into your skin by squeezing causing a minor infection. If it’s fragile, you might break it into smaller fragments making this A LOT worse! Wash & dry the spot with soap and water. Be gentle and pat dry the area with a soft paper towel. My favorite, the baking soda method really works best in your particular situation. Make a paste using water and about a quarter teaspoon of baking soda. Put this paste on a bandage and apply the bandage to the affected area. (This baking soda paste will cause the skin to swell and push the splinter out) After 24 hours, remove the bandage. The splinter/glass shard should be sticking out of the skin. If it’s visible, gently remove it with sanitized tweezers. Rinse the skin afterwards, and cover the open wound with a Band-Aid and Neosporin. (If the splinter was not completely removed, repeat this method with new paste and another bandage every 24 hours) Hope this helps!

I am going to try this now and in 24 hours I’ll tell you!
Thanks!

If this suggestion and all else fails, I would suggest you find another Doctor (perhaps Dermatologist) whose office is set up for minor surgery with local anesthetic (I doubt that localized Novocaine would affect pregnancy).

The only reason I mention a Dermatologist is because it’s fairly routine for them to do this type of procedure (or something similar like small cysts requiring a stitch ot two afterward) and I’m not sure that a Podiatrist would be.

But there’s no reason for you to continue to be in pain from something like this. And it’s pretty certain you’ll hardly have the time for this after the birth when you’re barely finding time to even sleep from the rigors of adjusting to caring for your delightful (but definitely requiring 24/7 care) newborn :)

If you can take the pain just cut it out! Burn the knife for about a minute and then perform surgery! I know someone who did something like that once lol!

I use Elmer’s Glue on the area and wait for it to dry and then peel it off slowly. The splinter should come out with it.

Some good ideas here and some absolutely insane ‘advice’.

One technique that I’ve used in the past with some success involves using another person to help. Take a dull knife, such as a butter knife, (or some other ‘edged’ implement without a sharp edge!) and ‘scrape’ it very, very lightly and slowly over the affected area. When the edge finds the “That’s it!” place, then turn it 90° and scrape perpendicular to that line. The intersection (when you find the “That’s it!” place again) will be the point to examine with a magnifying glass if necessary.

I never use anything more invasive than a sewing needle to remove splinters, and I use them all the time. If you have to dig deeply enough to draw blood, then you should be having a medical professional do that. (It doesn’t necessarily have to be a doctor; a nurse is fully competent – and maybe better able – to do this type of procedure. If cutting or stitches are going to be required, then a doctor’s oversight will also be necessary.)

You need something that will draw it up, its probally pretty deep if you know the location of the pain try putting on neosporin and a bandage over the area where the pain is, before the neosporin I would aslo soak your foot in very warm water it will help draw it up… where your pregnant I am afraid to suggest any thing like a black salve unless you talk to your doctor first

Step aside please, this is Dr Splinter. I use a very stong magnifying glass, a bowl of warm water and a scapel. soak the area with warm water… dab dry… then VERY VERY gantly fick at the skin around the slpinter until I can see which way it’s gone in. Then still VERY gently, flick away at the skin until I can get purchace on the splinter. Gently pulling it out. This might take a little while, but done correctly there is no pain. I have tried this many times. And have ALWAYS had a good result.

I use the same technique as @pezz except I use a pin instead of a scalpel.
