Does your dog like sitting under the car?

Asked by Jellie (6492points) August 26th, 2011

My dogs are always sitting under one of my cars. And this is not because they no other shaded area. I notice this more during the summer. I would imagine it would be really hot under the car. But they love sitting under there so much so that sometime they won’t even come to great me when I’m there. I’ll see them wagging their tails under the car as an acknowledgment but they refused to budge.

Anyone else notice this behaviour with their dogs?

Yup. My dog likes to lay under the car, as well. There are also other shaded areas, but she likes it under the car.

Well here’s me guessing you don’t let him drive that much, so where else is he supposed to hang?

No. Our dogs are large and usually end up under the picnic table. Our cat and kittens love to lay under the car though.

I’m thinking it’s sort of like a den to them. Dogs and other animals love smallish places where they feel secure. It’s instinctive.

I’m guessing @jonsblond‘s dogs are large enough the picnic table feels like a den to them, while under the car is a nice den-like place for the kitties.

I wonder if this may be part of their herding instinct. Herding dogs develop a strong sense for likely escape routes that their charges might try to use, then position themselves so that no one will slip away unnoticed. Maybe your dogs recognize your car as a prime escape route for you. Just a theory.

We had a sheltie (shelties have a very strong herding instinct) who used to position herself at the back door every morning when I was getting ready to leave for work. She would grab the cuff of my pants and try to pull me back into the house. She was obsessive about knowing where all members of the household were at all times, so she hated when we’d get out of her monitoring range.

No, but she does like shitting under the stars.

@thorninmud that’s so sweeet!!! One of my dogs goes ape shit if he’s in a car with us and one of us leaves the car. He’ll bark and bark and stare out the window after the person until they return. Then he will smell them all over as a way of checking if they have returned safe and sound.

@snowberry You’re right. I think they feel protected in a shelter.

No, but my cats used to. They’re both gone but a lot the neighborhood cats still do. Maybe if I let my dog run loose in the front yard, where the driveway is she might, but I don’t do that.

They would if they were out where the cars are but any place out of the direct sun is what they go for.
