What is your opinion about medical school and whether you suggest other schools to enter? (In any university or college)

Asked by jessyamr (143points) August 31st, 2011

I am a 17-year-old girl and I have to decide on a school, people call it faculty in some countries, to enter in College but I don’t know which to choose. So, I need suggestions and, if possible, advantages and disadvantages of each school. For example medical school, law school, etc.. and why or why not to choose one.
Thank you :)

I don’t know what you mean by faculty. If you were 27, I would think you wanted to teach at the college level. Do you mean facility or do you mean what major course of study should you pursue or something else entirely? Using “faculty” in this way may be a regional thing but I am not familiar with it.

@Kayak8 I meant something like medical school for example

Many countries use the equivalent of our noun “faculty” to refer to the different colleges within a university. A medical student at the University of Paris, for example, would say she’s enrolled at the “Faculté de médecine”.

Any suggestions? Recommendations?

I really see medical school as more something you have to do to become a doctor than something that should be done just for kicks. Maybe it would be better to figure out what you want your career to be than what you want your grad school to be.

What do you want to do when you grow up?

jessyamr's avatar

The thing is I don’t know exactly what is the most suitable career for me. I like science but I would like to know more about other fields than science e.g. law or whatever..

I know exactly how you feel, and quite frankly, I wish more parents and schools would help teens in this matter. But that’s another topic.

Here is what I’ve learned: First, you need to figure out what tasks really make you happy while doing it. For example, you mentioned science. What is it that you like task-wise? What are your interests outside of school? Do you like interacting with others? If so, when? Do you like doing research? If so, what types?

Tell us about specific tasks that you enjoy doing and that make time fly, and that will help us in pointing you in the right direction.

What is it that you do a lot that brings you enjoyment or fulfillment? What are the interests in your life? What intrigues you? If you are going to spend every week of your life working 40 hours (minimum) you better REALLY enjoy what you do. What is it that you have dreamt of as a younger person, you must have had some idea as to what it was you wanted to be when you grew up?

@jessyamr Then the answer is to not have an answer yet. You’re 17. Go to an undergraduate school and get a broad based education. You have time to decide.

All I can do is speak from experience. Personally I LOVED medical school. So much so in fact that I wish I could do it over again!

Yes, I’m a big nerd.

@Dr_C Yeah, compared to residency, med school was a cakewalk.
