What method do you suggest I use to raise funds for 3 academic conferences?

Asked by JonnyCeltics (2721points) August 31st, 2011

This Fall I am attending 3 academic conferences. I plan to apply for departmental funding to cover some of the costs within my home college.

There are 3 other beautiful people on my panel.

a) Do you suggest we fundraise separately, or together? My gut it telling me that we will have more success asking our friends and fam and colleagues personally to fun directly to each person…

b) ....and how so? Kickstarter seems focused on creative endeavors which this is, but not totally. Paypal seems impersonal.

Help! :)

Thanks, Fluther. Lurve you.

The conferences themselves might offer travel awards. Are you planning to just visit the conferences, or to present at them?

@Simone_De_Beauvoir, not all of us have this issue. My adviser gladly pays for me to attend conferences out of his grant, and I have travel grants from teaching awards that I’ve never needed to use.

Are you faculty or student? What sort of “panel” is this?

I second @nikipedia‘s suggestion, particularly if you’re a student – the conference itself will likely have a competition for travel bursaries, though it sounds like short notice if these conferences are in the fall.

Also – do you have to attend all 3 conferences? That’s rare where I come from… usually one big conference per year is considered manageable financially for a student. Attend if you’re planning to present, but otherwise, you may be better off saving your money.
