Would you accept one million dollars if you knew that somewhere someone you didn't know would die?

Believe in karma? If you take the money you will be causing someones death. Would you do it anyway?

This is going to sound bad, but yes.
Somewhere someone I don’t know dies everyday anyways.

(I feel like a horrible person.)

Breefield's avatar

Erm…people I don’t know die all the time. Are they dying BECAUSE I take the money, or simply dying?

trudacia's avatar

typo. sorry. hard to edit with my iphone.

Breefield's avatar

Oh, well then yes. I’d take it.

trudacia's avatar

breefield – the act of taking the money would cause someone to die.

Allie's avatar

Ahh, in that case, I want to change my answer.
I’d rather not take the money and that person live.

Breefield's avatar

Allie – you could justify it by saying you’d take that money and save others from dying…

xyzzy's avatar

There is a short film based on that question:

Black Button

It’s quite good.

PupnTaco's avatar

If they were causally related, no. .

Allie's avatar

Breefield: Knowing how I am with my money, I’d blow it. And I wouldn’t want that on my conscience.

peedub's avatar

Who is the person? Would I be doing the world a service by ridding the vermon? Perhaps this would add to my Karma equity, might it not?

One million dollars to do the world a great service….yes, sure, why not?

Allie's avatar

Good point, Peedizzle.

Randy's avatar

I’d take it. That person is eventually going to die anyways. If I knew them, no way. It might sound horriable, but I could do a lot with a million. Just to make things easier on myself and as a good jesture, I’d donate a portion to some charity or somewhere that helps others in some kind of need.

trudacia's avatar

what if it’s a kid? Or somebody’s Mom/dad/sister/brother?

kevbo's avatar

Yes, but I’d split it with him.

Randy's avatar

I won’t ever have to know. I’ll thank them everyday if that helps any. Like peedub said, I may be doing the world a favor. I wouldn’t expect someone to pass up that opportunity if I was the one that was going to die.

jrpowell's avatar

I would ask the person to give me more to save them. If they couldn’t they would get the bullet. If they could do 1.00001 million they could live.

I’m just kidding. I would never take the the money.

kevbo's avatar

@jp, I wonder if that would work on a broader scale, such as an eBay auction or game show. Or if kidnappers/terrorists ever attempt to get their ransom via a direct appeal via the Internet.

jrpowell's avatar

@kevbo I think it was tried with a bunny.

I hate the Internet.

peedub's avatar

Can the person be in chronic pain or something that actually makes them want to die? How much does Dr. Kevorkian make?

What if the person was Hitler? Didn’t he have siblings? If not, how about someone like a verified serial pedophile.

kevbo's avatar

@jp, that is pure evil… and a genius way to pay off student loans.

Mtl_zack's avatar

the person is gonna die anyways, at some point in his/her life. also, i’d arrange for the family to get gift baskets from me every month, with half of the money.

Randy's avatar

@Mtl zach- I don’t think if I was family of the deceased that I would want I recieve a gift basket every month to remind me of my loved ones death. I’d just want to mourn then get on with life. That’s just my opions though.

TheHaight's avatar

no way!!!! I wouldn’t take it. 1 million isn’t that much these days either. I just couldnt live with myself knowing someone would die because of this.

MrKnowItAll's avatar

MrKnowItAll would be happy to offer his services to pick the ‘winner’.

Randy's avatar

@TheHaight- Compared to some people, a millions not a lot. Compared to my 30,000 a year, that’s a huge upgrade.

rking1487's avatar

I wouldn’t take the money, a million dollars wouldn’t help me sleep at night. I wouldn’t compromise my character or integrity for any amount of money.

Someone dying shouldn’t be a time of grief, it should a time of joy knowing that they have left this world that is full of death and destruction and are now in a place(hopefully) filled with endless happiness. Technically by paying your taxes you are killing someone by fueling the war in Iraq, the only difference is that you don’t get anything in return because right now the war in Iraq isn’t stopping Osama from really doing anything. 232,876 die everyday on average, if one other person in added to the list then why would anyone care because obviously no one is freaking out about the numbers. It makes no sense why someone would feel grief about doing that if they feel no grief already that part of the 232,876 people dying are being killed with their tax money. As for Black Button, that would be a fluke, now if your talking about a person just coming and knocking on your door, then that would be different but when you mysteriously find yourself in a room with some strange person who’s making that offer something has to be up. I would take the money, even though you can barely buy apartment in New York for a cool million, if you go to the west coast you can find some pretty nice houses for about half a million.

nikipedia's avatar

$1m is really not that much money.

I would not intentionally cause pain or suffering to any person or his/her family for all the money in the world.

We should all make our peace with death.

But we should not do it out of sympathy to our own materialism.

delirium's avatar

Yes. And i’d dole it out in chunks of 20k to give to gifted children in third world countries so that they can go to school.

nicoleanna69's avatar

No way !! No amount would it take for me to agree and say yes!!! That is a terrible thought… LOL

gailcalled's avatar

I agree w. nicole that this is a bad question…. and no LOL’s from me.

TheHaight's avatar

yeah.. But randy, that person has to be killed for the million? It just doesnt seem like enough, OR RIGHT! :-/
agree with gail.

judochop's avatar

I would never….Death of anyone causes pain and money will never be able to buy a pain free existence.

ebenezer's avatar

it does seem like the more million dollar sized chunks of money change hands in this world the more innocent people die. The question is likely a bit more ambiguous in real life but I am sure it is “asked”?

elman25's avatar

causing pain and suffering for this persons family and loved ones doesnt seem to be justified by donating your money away. I will admit I did have to think about this question for a while but my end result is NO.. Because like Many of you mentioned money buys a lot of things and it does indeed make the world go round however it will never in a million years buy happiness. So to bring death to an innocent person will only bring you misery.

peedub's avatar

@elman- Who said the person had to be innocent?

elman25's avatar

@peedub – true, but who said they are guilty or bad in anyway… For all we know it could sweatest old lady in the world or a new born child… My main point is that nothing in life is free and price on this decision will get paid dearly

peedub's avatar

Nothing is stipulated about us not knowing who would die, but I guess the point is that killing anyone, bad or good, would be wrong. There just might be some instances where this would be more tempting, especially if the money is to be used for good.

JiRa's avatar

No. I would not take a million dollars knowing that someone I DID NOT KNOW would die. Karma will get me and that same offer will be given to someone that DOES NOT KNOW ME…...

trudacia's avatar

Here’s a scenario you haven’t considered. Let’s say you accept the money and someone you don’t know dies. This person can be good, evil, whatever – doesn’t matter.

A new person is now offered the the same deal….they accept as well. Guess who’s dying next…..you!

hmmm karma!

I think this was a twilight zone episode.

peedub's avatar

@Trudacia- I think you drive a black-on-black vehicle.

trudacia's avatar

I’m nice I promise. And i wouldnt take the deal!! Like I said, I think I saw this on the twilight zone…..

Evol's avatar

No. Not enough. 1 billion. er (moment of thought), still no.
