What's this year's maximum temperature difference where you live?

Asked by robmandu (21331points) September 6th, 2011

I live near DFW airport, where the lowest temperature was 15°F reported February 2nd and the highest temperature was 110°F reported August 2nd—for a difference of 95°F.

There seemed to be a lot of really cold weather this past winter and it’s been really hot all across the U.S. this summer, too. Just wondering if ninety-plus degree swings in temperature are normal this year.

I know it is not exact but we hit a high of 105 this summer in Chicago and I remember seeing -13 without windchill one morning going to work. So I guess that is about a 123 degree temperature range. Factor in wind chill reading as push that out well over 180 degrees.

It’s marginally warmer in the summer compared to the winter here in England Town, only just mind :¬(

We had a few winter days when it hit mid 20’s below zero F and our high came close to 100 degrees F. Do you want that in C also?

105F at Dulles Airport on July 22
Jan. 22–24, with subfreezing highs and minimums in single digits including 6oF at IAD

So, the difference was 99 degrees.

-6.1 ℃ (21.02 ºF) 22–2-2011
35.2 ℃ (95.36 ºF) 28–6-2011

There was one day in spring where we had night frost after the day temp was around 25 ℃.

Aurora, CO (near Denver) Low -4 °F Feb 2 2011; High 96 °F August 25, 2011. These are the official temperatures. My backyard thermometer (which I had calibrated to NIST stand.ards in 2003) recorded -5 °F and 101 °F respectively, on those same days

HIgh 90’s to well below O F., without including in the wild chill factor.

NYS near w. MA in the Berkshires.

We had -25 °F in February, and hit 125 °F this summer… wind chill and heat index included… Too much of a difference if you ask me!!!

If you want to talk windchills, in the back left of my avatar is Whiteface Mountian, not quite 5000 feet tall. There’s a weather station on top of it. They recorded a windchill of minus 187 degrees F once.

Where in the world are you guys finding these annual temperatures? I’ve been looking and all I’m finding is the highest and lowest temperature of my area ever or for this day

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@martianspringtime I’m just going from memory of what the actual temps were. I posted a question on January 17 2011 and it was -20 degrees F that day.

Strauss's avatar

@martianspringtime I have my own recordingdigital thermometer, but I compared my readings with the official readings at weather underground. There’s a link on the lower left under “Local Weather” to “History Data. Just plug in the zip and date.

I have a pretty good idea from having lived here for 25 years. The highs and lows have been memorable, particularly those days well below freezing with power outages and the need to pee outside.

Some peretty intense records can happen here too in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

I think the extremes I just read recently somewhere for this month is a record low of 45 and a record high of like 106 or 8.

We can have snow and temps in the teens or lower and rise up to well over a 100 in the summers. Pretty variable.

Officially so far this year -17F in January, 102F in August. 119F difference.

Historical largest annual difference was -28F and +115F in 1988.

My Shingletown place had a low of 4F, and a high somewhere in the 90’s.

Wow, we went down to -40 and up to 90F this year. We had some big changes from day to day this summer, mostly unpleasant!! Funnily enough we are to go to 30 above centigrade tomorrow. This is Alberta.

High:
92.7 °F
33.7 °C

Low:
37.4 °F
3.0 °C

Difference:
55.3 °F
30.7 °C

It’s pretty temperant here in the bay area.

Temperate.

@Adirondackwannabe and @Yetanotheruser thanks! (that weather underground page is really cool)

The difference in our average temperature here (from last September to now) is 16 degrees (avg high = 84, avg low = 68). It says we had 35 degrees at some point here, but I don’t know where the hell I was on that miracle day…
South Florida is a bad, bad place. The highs are high all the time and the lows are still pretty high almost all of the time

I lived in South Florida for a few years. A co-worker told me there are three seasons…last summer, this summer and next summer.
