Alternatives to Twitter?

Asked by tlm (475points) September 11th, 2011

I’m looking for some good Twitter-like social networks. This seems interesting, so I wonder if there are any other alternatives you are aware of.

Ahem. The founders and programming staff of Fluther were acquired by and now work for Twitter.

So maybe that’s a bit of a tricky question on here.

Oh, I see, ethical stuff huh :D Okay, never mind then.

I don’t see a problem with asking or answering the question here. I am on FB, google+ and Plurk. Both G+ and Plurk have similarities to Twitter and I like them quite a bit.

@janbb: Plurk, you say. Never even heard. Let me check that out.

@tlm Your link just takes me to this question. I’m curious what it was supposed to be.

I’m not really into Twitter type things, so I can’t really help you out there with any personal experience. I did find a couple lists of sites that are similar along with descriptions of each site.

@marinelife Ben and Andrew don’t strike me as the type that would be upset by someone checking out other sites. They never seemed to mind when people would ask about other Q&A sites, and they actually built this one rather than simply working for it.

Sorry, @bobbinhood, the link was supposed to be this—I miswrote it.

I was going to suggest identi.ca, which is basically the prime example of status.net.

What exactly about Twitter do you like that you’re looking to find in other social networks that isn’t something you find in all social networks?
