Please help me identify the instruments in this Marilyn Manson song!

Asked by atarah09 (254points) September 12th, 2011

Can someone listen to the song The Dope Show by Marilyn Manson and tell me what types of instruments are being played throughout the song? I am taking an online music course, and one of my assignments is to find a song with instruments and voices that showcase low notes. For example, the bass, tuba, alto and bass voices. Having a hard time identifying the instruments, please help. Thanks! The link to the song will be provided below.

I’m hearing several types of electric guitars, possibly an electric bass guitar, a synthesizer, a digital drum set and possibly a regular drum set. That high pitched alien sound (kind of like a bumblebee on steroids) and the sound that kind of seems like a fart or a motor boat and most of the intro are definitely separate sounds from a synthesizer. The high pitched quaaang quaaaang quaaaang near the end is from an electric guitar. The constant tick tick tick throughout the song is a digital drum set.

@Kardamom, I’m pretty sure you did! I wasn’t expecting such a detailed response, I’m grateful.

@atarah09 Just for your own fun, you should check out this song called “The Bell” by Michael Oldfield, which is one of the themes from a larger piece called “Tubular Bells”. In this version Alan Rickman (aka Severus Snape from Harry Potter) actually names each instrument as it starts to play.

You can listen to it here and see some nifty pictures of Alan Rickman too, that’s how I discovered it ; – )

@Kardamom, Ok, will do! Thank you, need all the help I can get. I’ll take advantage of this opportunity.

I agree with @Kardamom on almost everything. There are electric guitars, a bass, a synthesizer and a drum kit. But I do not hear any electric drum kit. Oh—and voice, too, of course.
