Borg invasion, do you fight, surrender, or dodge and hide?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) September 14th, 2011

If at 1pm EST US all communications around the globe were hijacked by the Borg orbiting the Earth in a Borg Sphere. They warned that within 48hrs fifteen larger Borg Cubes would join them, to assimilate all of mankind, and graft our technology into their own. They will annihilate anyone that resists assimilation. With no practical hope of defeating them, would you surrender and be assimilated, fight until the bitter end, or try to hide and wait them out until they picked the earth of all the advance technology and moved on?

Fight to the end,dear. :)

Resistance is futile. Really? This has been up an hour and I’m the first to say that?

Paul's avatar

Surrender. I’m a coward when it comes to deadly situations.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Oh, and @Hypocrisy_Central , they probably would not move on as there are still resources to be harvested, here. They would probably hunker down and stay until everything was used up, which, when one considers their technology is arguably capable of rendering stuff to its elemental form, could be quite awhile. I don’t imagine there would be any “hiding” til they left.

Fight everyone!

filmfann's avatar

Advanced technology? Here? They’ll get an app of Angry Birds, and move on.
I’ll wait out the 2 minutes.

tedd's avatar

Actually if I recall correctly, Starfleet was moving back towards projectile weaponry to fight the borg, as their adaptation abilities couldn’t adapt to them like they could phasers.

Our guns would work pretty well against the borg.

Wake me up in seven hours and I’ll let you know.

This question should be moved to General.

JilltheTooth's avatar

OK, Locutus, you go regenerate and let us know later.

zensky's avatar

Phasers on stun.

ragingloli's avatar

Surrender? I would volunteer to become Locutus.

TexasDude's avatar

None of the above.

I would troll them into oblivion.

I think the solution is obvious. I’d call Voyager and have them open up a portal to fluidic space and Species 8472 come and take out the Borg.

It’s the only reasonable way to go.

@JilltheTooth They would probably hunker down and stay until everything was used up, which, when one considers their technology is arguably capable of rendering stuff to its elemental form, could be quite awhile. You can to a point, travel among them if you had no technology to bring attention to towards you. I never seen them as manufacturers, they were more like Vikings or pirates, taking the best of what others had made. It may take years, to many years but I think they would, within eight years have picked apart the world of all its technology, then leave and go look for more. If you found a way to live primitively, you might slide under the radar.

@tedd Our guns would work pretty well against the borg. Seeing a modern E-22 Raptor, Sukhoi T-50 Maksimov, etc, of today are at least 30 times smaller than Akira, and Ambassador class starships, that would make any bullets or missiles fairly small. Worse than trying to take down a bull elephant with a .22 snub nose revolver. When they discover most of our weaponry is depended on electronics and computer, which would be primitive compared to theirs, a well placed EMP spread and most of the defenses are pretty much blind at that point. Even the big 16 in cannons on a battle ship would be small by comparison.

@JilltheTooth, @zensky Go get a holodeck, we don’t allow that sort of behavior in 10 Forward eye roll

@KatawaGrey I’d call Voyager and have them open up a portal to fluidic space and Species 8472 come and take out the Borg. Sadly we have no Starfleet today. If we did, how can we be sure Species 8472 won’t turn on us after polishing off the Borg?

As far as I know, the only time bullets were used against the Borg was when Picard shot two drones with a holographic tompson. Since the Holodeck uses shaped force fields to create the illusion of solid objects, it can be argued that even this was an example of an energy weapon.
Besides, even normal phasers can fire multiple shots until the drones adapt, so since there were only two drones, there is no reason to believe that the Borg could not adapt to projectile weapons as easily as they do to directed energy weapons.

All of our military machinery is planet bound, so they could easily wipe us out from orbit.
Our standard warheads are weak and would most likely not even make a dent in their hull plating.
Even our most powerful nuclear weapons are puny compared to the standard federation photon torpedo, which is an antimatter warhead, plus a torpedo has a small warp drive in it that enables the torpedo to fly at Warp 1. All of our missiles and rockets are moving at snails pace by comparison. Even at impulse, any federation starship is faster than even our fastest vehicle. Meaning the Borg would just intercept any missile or rocket with their tractor beams, if they even bothered to, seeing that they would not do any damage anyway.
So the fact is that we have no way to damage them except for a few initial drones should they decide to land.
And they do not even need to do that.
The latest plan of theirs was detonating a bio weapon in earth’s atmosphere, that would infect every life form on earth with Borg Nanites. That’s 6 billion new drones in one or two days. Tops.
Humanity does not have the slightest chance to survive, much less to win.

Gotta tell ya, @Hypocrisy_Central , I am loving this Q! Get it? Huh? “Loving this Q”? ha ha ha

I don’t know, which way is the fastest to get into 7 of 9’s pants?

Anyway the God Emperor shall awaken and smite then all.

I have an axe. Fuckin borgs. Bring that shit!

I’m pretty sure I’d probbaly just die.

In all reality, I’d probably try to hide in some remote forest, and hope they never have any interest in that particular forest.

@The latest plan of theirs was detonating a bio weapon in earth’s atmosphere, that would infect every life form on earth with Borg Nanites. How large is a Borg Nanite? What are the options? If they are large enough to filter, you can survive in a hazmat suit. Maybe a NORAD-like bunker deep underground. You will need fresh air or a way to scrub the air clean, but then you would use technology that might lead the Borg to you. If you can get out, then they can get in and they will assimilate you. You can spend the time deep under the sea in a nuclear powered sub. You’d run out of food and have to come to the surface, then they might be able to latch hold of you with a tractor beam, gut the sub like a fish, and infect the grew. Perhaps high up in the mountains and hope the Nanites are too heavy to be carried by the wind up to those elevations? Personal EMP emitters that might render any Nanite near you impotent? Those Nanites will be hard to beat.

Many years ago, I was talking to someone who believed this was really going to happen (and any day now, even)!

He believed that his God (I didn’t ask what religion he was; maybe Pastafarianism…) was going to swoop down on Earth in a gigantic Borg cube thousands of miles on a side (he didn’t mention the Borg, tho), land it on Earth, and enslave everyone who was expecting it to happen, and kill everyone who wasn’t. He didn’t say “enslave” either; he was rather looking forward to it.

I asked him if he was a fan of Star Trek, and he just gave me a blank stare and said something about light sabres(?!?!) being scientifically impossible. I replied that it is dimensionally impossible to land a cube a thousand miles per side on the Earth, but he said that (his) God could do anything He darn well pleased.

Further discussion became futile. I think he was confused…

ragingloli's avatar

In a documentary they once showed (I think) that you can give magnetic fields custom arbitrary shapes.
You could then use that shaped “force-field” to confine ultra high temperature plasma (like they do in Tokamak Reactors)
You would then have a functional light saber.

The cube itself could land if it uses an anti gravity generator to reduce its weight. Tweaked right, it could then land on your head while weighing no more than a small bird.

HungryGuy's avatar

Cool! I don’t know which I want more: a real light sabre, or a real portal gun…

ragingloli's avatar

You could also use infrared lasers that turn the air into plasma at a predetermined point to make a light sabre. You just need a thousand of those lasers and make them really tiny so they fit on a handle.

HungryGuy's avatar

That’s cool. I can’t find it now, but I once saw a video where someone took a BluRay player apart and made a very serious laser pistol out of the innards.

incendiary_dan's avatar

Apparently I’ll be assimilated whether I fight or not. Might as well drop some zombierobots. I’m pretty good with a Kalash and a barong machete, and they seem like they have poor aim.
