Have you seen people helping themselves recently?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37344points) September 15th, 2011

I watched this youTube video, and it renewed my hope in peoples’ ability to help their neighbors.

Have you seen any examples in your own neighborhood or on the news or on the Internet of grass roots help recently?

Excellent, @Hawaii_Jake. Thanks for a real… um… day-brightener.

It’s not at all a new idea, since even in the days of sailing ships, they used ship glass embedded in the decks to add light to dark holds. But this was a clever and novel idea using mostly found materials. Wonderful ingenuity.

I always help them if they need it, and sometimes I help them even if they never ask me to help. Most of them return the favor.

Come to think of it, @Hawaii_Jake, and without being overly facetious, this could be a temporary solution to the problems of insufficient landfill for garbage dumps in the developed world.

Considering that in the Philippines it is not at all uncommon for people to live in dumps, and the quality of the trash is so generally worthless there after no one can use it… if the USA, Australia and other developed economies sent their “trash” there (as disgusting as that seems to people with a Western / First World mentality) it would be a huge boon to these folks.

I know lots of people who scavenge useful and workable items and objects from American dumps. Imagine the benefit to someone with even lower expectations – and more incentive – to use what’s available.

@CWOTUS I have seen several examples recently of people using plastic bottles filled with trash, sand or mud as building elements.

@ANef_is_Enuf—EB is a blast but the benefit for breast cancer is a good way for the community to get involved.Every year people make “bras” for the local fire departments to model on a runway and people will stuff them with cash then bid on the bras modelled. They have earned some decent cash for that event in the few years that they have been doing it.
