How much weight did you gain during your first 12 weeks of pregnancy?

Asked by pkuttner (150points) September 17th, 2011

I just had my 12 week visit to the OB and it turns out I gained 10 lb. in a month!!!!!!! Ouch!

I was having really bad nausea so I totally stopped exercising and I only ate carbs and salty foods. Now the nausea is gone so I am trying to get the weight gain under control. I exercised and ate healthy before I was pregnant, but the nausea really threw me off. Did anyone else experience this and then have it level out?

Here is a pregnancy weight gain tracker that will help ypu. You need to plug in your height and starting weight.

In my first 12 weeks? I didnt gain any weight, I was still a size 5 until I hit my 6th month of being pregnant, it was the last 3 months that nearly doubled my weight. It’s easiest to lose weight right after the baby is born, and I’ve heard that breast feeding helps you lose weight also.

Maybe 10lbs.

Its not uncommon to also get water gain. I puked for the first two months and still managed to gain weight the first two month, even though I couldn’t keep anything down but juice and milk. My stomach hurt like the dickens and my doc said I had to slow down eating. I wanted to choke him because crackers wouldn’t even stay down.

I had a decrease in appetite and had trouble gaining weight. I had to push myself a little to get in enough calories.

Ideal weight gain for the first 3 months is a total of about 3 pounds. But when you’re battling morning sickness, it helps to keep a little something in your stomach all the time, and that can lead to higher than ideal weight gain. The baby’s specific nutritional needs are small during the first trimester, it’s more about staying hydrated and in decent electrolyte balance, so if you’re feeling sick, you’re best off eating the foods that “sound right” to you rather than focusing on trying to keep down a perfectly balanced pregnancy eating plan.

Now that you’ve survived the first trimester, and your stomach has hopefully settled down, you can pay more attention to the 4 food groups and portion control. Aim for a little less than a pound a week from here on out if you started the pregnancy at a healthy weight. If you started out overweight, aim for about ½ pound a week to reduce the risk of pregnancy complications.

Full disclosure: I’m a former nurse midwife and current OB/GYN nurse practitioner.

I am soooo glad that I never had morning sickness when I was pregnant…...my cousin had to be hospitalized for dehydration because she was so sick during most of her pregnancy.
