Tracfone – My particular handset is a Samsung (don’t know the model).

Yes, I get iPhone envy from time to time, but then I remind myself that I only pay $8.00 per month for my cell phone service and I can talk on it just as well as the $400 handset + $80 per month service fee models.

I use an LG with a Virgin Mobile prepaid plan.

Using an Evo-4g. Bought it used over the internet for about $250, runs me ~$70 unlimited texts and internet, and 450 minutes (which I never even come close to hitting). Bought a long life battery off the net for another $20 or so.

Love the phone. Heavily favor android system over iPhone or Blackberry or what have you, and the Evo-4g runs it about as well as any other android phone out there. The battery life is really the only complaint I have, but with my extended life I usually get at least a full day without charging (and that’s with apps and stuff going). The regular battery lasted the whole day with conservative usage.

I’m with @YoBob… more or less. I have a Net10 account, also with a decent Samsung slide-out full keypad on a “dumb” phone. (I like that keypad for infrequent texts, and for adding user information to my directory; the iPhone features look nice, but pricey.)

I don’t even pay as much as he does. A few years ago I had a problem that took Customer Service several days to resolve, and every day when I’d call I’d go through a whole directory of well-meaning but incapable CS people. One of them finally told me, “Look, we’ve been messing with this for days and days, and you’ve been more than patient, so I’m going to fix one thing for you for certain, right now.” He gave me some codes to punch into the phone, had me wait for confirmation, punched in more codes, then had me look at the display.

I’m now “paid up” with continuous service (although I still have only 500-odd paid-up minutes) through sometime in 2038. That is, my minutes won’t expire until then. (And at the rate I use the phone, I may not have to renew the minutes until around 2020.)

@CWOTUS lol, there is definitely something to be said for that.

HTC Smartphone

Sony Xperia X10i (model number SO-01B).

It runs a semi-vanilla Android 2.1 (I could hack it to run 2.3+, but I can’t be arsed).

@tedd I am so jealous. Buying that phone is my dream. Saving up for it.

iPhone 4 user waiting for a decent Android phone to be released so I can return to a fully-operational mobile OS (former Motorola Droid 1 owner).

I don’t really know… It’s a nokia, I think
It calls and sends messages, and… that’s it. I’m very happy with it, but I wouldn’t want it near my heart or genitals. It’s black and blue, it has a screen, and numbers and letters. I think it has a camera, but I’m not sure.
It’s a phone!!!

I wonder whether they used to ask about each other’s phones as well in the 20th century… “Look! I’ve got a new phone, it’s the new Meucci, it’s totally badass, check out its applications!”
“Dude, just stay with the Bell, man, it’s way more radical!”

I use a casio gzone ravine. It may not be a fancy high tech smart phone but its shock and water proof and im one of the most accident prone people I know and work around water everyday so its great for me. Can take a shitload of abuse and still work perfectly fine. I couldnt be trusted with a smart phone, i’d crack the screen in a day lol.

I have the LG enV3 and I’m long overdue for a smartphone. Perhaps in a couple months I’ll get one.

A Motorola i335 from Boostmobile. The anti-christ of smart phones but at 50 bucks a month, it’s awesome.

Iphone 4g.

woodcutter's avatar

Nokia 3595. It’s built like a tank and it has served me well since 2005. The battery charge lasts about 4–5 days and it does everything I need it to do. Still looks like new.

@erichw1504 You should be able to get Alexander Graham Bell ! !

A old Nokia phone that doesn’t even have a color screen. It is a pay as you go phone. I use the phone so little it is a whopping 5 bucks a month. I have a iPod Touch so that covers all the smartphone crap.

FutureMemory's avatar

@johnpowell Wow, I just checked out what an iPod Touch can do…(I’m admittedly a huge n00b when it comes to electronics) is it really as awesome as it looks? I had no idea mp3 players were so advanced…I was considering getting an Android, but now I just might get the Touch and stick with my crappy non-smart LG phone.

jrpowell's avatar

@FutureMemory :: It is pretty much a iphone without the phone. It has wifi and will run 95% of the apps the iPhone does. And I paid 200$ bucks for it and no monthly fees.

tom_g's avatar

@FutureMemory and @johnpowell – I did the iPod Touch + flip phone for 2 years prior to getting my first smartphone. It works pretty well for some things. Warning – once you go the smartphone route, you will not be able to return to such a setup. In fact, the list of things I would give up before my smartphone grows every day. Having internet access at my finger tips whenever I want is something I take for granted now.

FutureMemory's avatar

That’s the issue for me, the monthly fees. I’m having a hard enough time just paying for the service on my LG, I’m sure an Android would raise my monthly by $30–40.

tom_g's avatar

@FutureMemory – I pay $26/mo extra for data through Verizon (save $4/mo discount because of my employer). Check to see if your employer has a discount program with a carrier.

At this point, the carriers could all raise their prices to $80/mo for data and I would be still get it. I don’t have cable tv, don’t eat out, and I save money in so many other ways. Having internet access is a necessity now. Warning: I told you that it can be dangerous. There is no returning from this.

FutureMemory's avatar

@tom_g I see above that you have an iphone – are you happy with it? I’ve never had a smart phone, and don’t know anyone that does. All my peeps are still in the dark ages =/.

tom_g's avatar

@FutureMemory – iOS = the Fisher Price of mobile operating systems. Actually, it’s really slick, hardly crashes, feels just amazing (very responsive), and has a consistent look. However, it does about 10% of what Android can do, so I cannot recommend it.**

** With one exception – if you are into games or recording music (mini 4-track, etc), iOS is the way to go.

Also, the iPhone 4 just feels really old. The screen is tiny, there is only one button, and the actual realestate for browsing the web, etc. is crap. There is no external LED, and no user-replaceable or swappable battery.

Samsung flip phone quite like this one but it says “AT&T” instead of T-Mobile. I assume that makes some sort of difference. It texts and makes phone calls, and I figured out how to get a Doctor Who ringtone on it. Not bad, I say!

blueiiznh's avatar

I guess I should feel lucky that I have yet to pay for a phone or service and have had a smartphone of current technology for about 12 years for my job. Very thankful for the money I have saved, but not for being tied to work tighter..

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Samsung flip phone I bought through Straight Talk (Wal Mart).

woodcutter's avatar

@Neizvestnaya How is that smart talk plan @ WM?

athenasgriffin's avatar

LG Dare. It is boring, but it has a touchscreen and it works.

DeanV's avatar

Motorola Droid X2.

Got it recently and love it.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@woodcutter: I love it! I buy the cheapo $30. card and have never gone over my minutes or text allowance before the 30 days is up. The best part though, I don’t even have to go into a Wally’s to buy the card. I can buy it online and have the code emailed to me within an hour, usually just a matter of minutes. I flip open my phone, tap in the code and I’m up and running again.

No having to pay to make a payment, no “service use taxes”, no more bullshite!

woodcutter's avatar

@Neizvestnaya I was just wondering. I have seen some customer comments on line and it seems 50/50 for those who like it vs those who didn’t. Or the phones are reconditioned crap. I would feel much better if the ratio was more “like” heavy. The people at the store really don’t know for sure what it’s about. I think all they need to know is how to sell it and make change, wait , the register figures that out for them. I would really like to port my current number because my work is tied to that one. But they say it can’t be done, or if they do try it will be days or weeks before it’s on. I can’t work off a temp phone #, not for long. It would be good to save some money but not if it’s going to give me heartburn.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@woodcutter: Our whole household changed over to these last year and we were able to keep our existing phone numbers if we wanted, no problem as it happened within 24hrs. Also, there are several phones to choose from and we were told which were new devices after asking about reconditioned.

My fiancee went from years on a crackberrie to one of these and he’s doing just fine with the simple abilities. It’s not for people who want to read news feeds online or play angry byrds but for simple text and calling and web access, I can’t remember paying anything as low as $30.00, ever.

woodcutter's avatar

@Neizvestnaya When you say web access, what is that, on a phone? Is it worth getting if the screens on the phone are like 1½”. I know my trusty nokia is going to die someday(which was the main reason why I went with T-Mobile) so an upgrade will more or less be forced on me.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@woodcutter: It’s why I call “emergency web access” for the very reason the screen is so tiny but it has come in handy to check some things real quick when out in the car or in a store.

I had T-mobile for the last decade and grew increasingly annoyed when I couldn’t make free online payments or free phoned in payments, there were always new “extra fees” being tacked on, what a waste!
