Do allegations of warehouse employee abuse change your opinion about Amazon?

Asked by fizzbanger (2765points) September 24th, 2011

After reading this article, I realized that I had never really thought about how all those little packages magically get processed and shipped so quickly. I know this is only one warehouse, but apparently, the harsh demands and high turnover rates are pretty commonplace throughout the company. They seem to be taking advantage of the crappy economy by using and disposing of thousands of workers.

Is this just another example of a large corporation “doing what it has to do” to keep prices competitive and customers happy?

Does reading an article like this make you think twice about shopping with Amazon?

I’ve only used Amazon a few times years ago, but it seems any corporation that services millions of people is going to have to abuse someone some way or another.

I read that a few days ago. I have stopped using Amazon just like I stopped shopping at Walmart. I even have a few websites that had ads from Amazon on them. The ads were promptly removed.

That’s a pretty brutal though I’m not surprised for the following reasons:

Warehouse generally aren’t well equipped for extremes of weather.

Businesses with great numbers of hourly employees often rotate them out via offering only temporary positions, slightly less than f/t hours or laying off near benefits qualifying time. The only business I’ve personally seen prioritize keeping employees are those where the employees are commissioned and they’ll keep the top earners, rotating out the mid and lower range ones to chance getting more crops of “heavy hitters”.

Does this make me think less of Amazon? Yes, I feel wage earners deserve as decent treatment as top earners. Will I stop shopping with them? Sure, if I can find whatever it is I need now and then at lower or similar prices.

I have seen many different companies do this sort of thing before Amazon existed. Hell, I have worked for a few as well.

What people don’t seem to realize is that, while this isn’t exactly the norm, it happens often enough that it can be considered endemic/systemic. These are the jobs we have; take them or be unemployed.

It doesn’t make me think twice about Amazon because I pretty much assumed that this was the case anyways.

Not really. It makes me even more in favor of unions and safeguards, but I’ve never though Amazon would be above doing what everyone else is.

Unfortunately, according to this letter to Amazon after an OSHA inspection, they are not currently violating any specific OSHA standards so it appears that OSHA can only make recommendations and Amazon doesn’t really have to follow them. Bad times when an employer has to station two ambulances staffed with paramedics because of the conditions that their employees work under necessitate it. I suppose that’s better than in the old days when they would have let them die, eh @jerv? They’re the jobs we have though, I guess. Can’t be picky.

@Blackberry

ANY COMPANY ? ?

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Zappos was a happy exception. Check out their website and their policies.

Altho they began with selling shoes, they are consistently adding new types of products, kitchenware, etc.

I shop with them as often as I can and their employees are unfailingly happy and very pleasant.

I’ve asked a few of them if the stuff written on the website is accurate and every single one I’ve spoken with confirms it.

Man… I just don’t understand their logic… like, why not open up the place and let some air circulate, and staff some extra loss prevention personnel instead of paramedics?

Sigh… a little bit of negative media attention isn’t going to change much of anything. Their inventory, prices, and free shipping are just too damn convenient.
