I am a BMI Member. How can I get paid royalties for my music?

Asked by BoyWonder (811points) September 28th, 2011

I’ve been a member of BMI for quite awhile and have done some work in the past with some major producers. They submitted my music to distribution companies who then licensed it to major networks (don’t know if i’m saying it right) and have helped me to gain residual income on my music that was used. How can I go about doing this myself, or do I need some sort of outside representation to do that?

I am also a member of BMI. I need to make sure I keep my address and contact information updated with them and I send them copies of all new copyrights so they can track the information. I get at least once a year correspondence from them. You can follow up with them directly and inquire as to the status of specific songs (specific recordings of them, lyrics, music, your performance on them, etc.).
