Can someone help me find the name of this book?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) September 30th, 2011 from iPhone

Okay guys. This may be a total shot in the dark, but I am dying to know the name of this book. I only have vague details.

The book was about couples selling their children to rich people.

And that’s all I have. I am sorry and I know it’s not a lot to work off of, but I figured I’d try anyways.

You, my dear, are a lifesaver. Thank you so much.

The only novel I know of that’s about the sale of children is The Child Buyer, by John Hersey. It’s pretty old, and I read it a long time ago, but I remember thinking it was good enough to read twice.

Looks like you’ve already got the one you were after, though. Good work, @DreamTrees.

@Jeruba Thank you anyway! I’ll still put it on my reading list!

@KateTheGreat—you’re very welcome :)

Infor courtesy of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Modest_Proposal

“A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People in Ireland From Being a Burden on Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick,[1] commonly referred to as A Modest Proposal, is a Juvenalian satirical essay written and published anonymously by Jonathan Swift in 1729. Swift suggests that impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling their children as food for rich gentlemen and ladies.[2] This satirical hyperbole mocks heartless attitudes towards the poor, as well as Irish policy in general”

It looks to me like the correct response to this question was moderated off. Strange.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@janbb Totally weird.

lillycoyote's avatar

@janbb I noticed that too. @DreamTrees answer, the first one, the correct answer, same as the one she reposted, right? ... was modded. WTF? Someone’s got some ‘splainin’ to do, I think, :-)

[mod says] The first (correct) answer didn’t include a link to the source. We don’t want anyone to get in copy/paste trouble. :)

dappled_leaves's avatar

I thought perhaps it was because of the spelling of “Publick”. :P

@Augustlan Thanks darling! Makes complete sense now.

@KateTheGreat Shall we move this thread over to Social? Otherwise, I’m going to have to remove more. :p

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Augustlan Pretty please with a Cheryl on top?

KateTheGreat's avatar

Crapola. That was supposed to say “cherry” not “Cheryl”. Damn autocorrect.

janbb's avatar

@KateTheGreat It’s funnier that way!

augustlan's avatar

What does this ‘Cheryl’ look like? I might be open to having her on top. Just sayin’.

Jeruba's avatar

@augustlan, wait—do you mean that you remove responses even if no one flags them?? Why?

KateTheGreat's avatar

Cheryl is a total hottie. She likes being on top.

lillycoyote's avatar

I was wondering who Cheryl was. LOL.

augustlan's avatar

@Jeruba Yes, if we see answers that don’t meet guidelines, or need attribution, we remove them even if they haven’t been flagged. All part of the mod job.
