What would you do if you found your grama washing the barbequed chicken?

Asked by flo (13313points) October 3rd, 2011

She said she dropped the chicken when asked why she is doing that. She is normally someone who would show people how to slice off or peel off the area of the food item that came in contact with dirt without casing cross contamination. Lately, she’s been forgetting things a lot, and doing things that someone with an average, or even just below average intelligence would not do. Her family memebers are scared of leaving her alone. Do you think it is Alzheimer’s or something else?

I’d be concerned with stroke damage, first and rule that out.

My main concern would be if she can answer common questions, speak without slurring her speech, and squeeze with both hands with equal pressure.

Sounds alarming. If it was me, I’d inform myself on the net by looking for similar, if not identical, symptoms. I’d also take @SpatzieLover‘s advice. Has anything happened to her lately?
I’d also be quick to bring her to a doctor, and have him or her check out my grandmother.

It is possible the unset or full blown Alzheimer’s. Your family should to have her testedby a physician as soon as possible. The earlier the diagnosis the sooner proper care can be administered. ((((((Hugs))))) and well wishes.

It is not my grama by the way, @AmWiser she is a friend’s. Thanks for the hugs.

Sounds like the begining stages of dementia to me, I would talk to her doctor. There are so many medications these days that can lessen the effects. My grandmother went through this before alzheimers set in and she couldn’t remember even who I was from day to day. The sad thing is that they know they are forgetting and its hard on them so the thing is not to make grandma feel bad about anything she is doing diffrently. I would though start with talking to the doctor, its the best place to start.

I agree with that. The family has made appointment with the doctor. What a waste, and she is only in her 60’s, I think.

@flo sorry to hear but the good news is they have made so much progress in the medications

@SpatzieLover there is no slurring of speech, or other stroke symptoms

@Symbeline yeah she has been showing signs that she is losing her memory.

@creative1 You’re right I just heard about 2 weeks or so ago, something really promising. I have to find out exactly what.

Try to get her to a professional who knows what they are doing, but in the meantime, play along. My wife’s gramma who was 90 something was trying to cook a slice of pizza top down in the toaster oven. Without making a big deal about it, I took out the pie and put it back in the oven right side up. When she saw what I did I could tell she was wanting an explanation why. I tell her it’s better to cook it on both sides. Anyhoo the wife thought it was cute.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@woodcutter Yep, my great aunt nearly burned down her apartment making a pizza. Her “silliness” was stroke onset (and it began like in a dementia like way).

@flo It’d be wise for your friends to get her a thorough exam. For now, I’d watch her like a hawk.

@woodcutter Lcuky she got to 90 without these kinds of issues, but maybe she had other issues. Good advice about being subtle.

@SpatzieLover they are definitely watching her like a hawk. They are even afraid about the night time.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@flo They should look into getting a bed alarm if they are seriously concerned about bed time. For $30 to $40, they’d have some security.

@SpatzieLover Fantastic idea. I will suggest it to them, if they’re not on it already.

Washing chicken isn’t strange. If it is just a bit over a use date washing it in cold water kills bacteria.

flo's avatar

@GabrielsLamb it is barbequed chicken that just came out of the oven.

GabrielsLamb's avatar

OoOoooOoh… Yeah, that’s not good.

Depends. Did she drop it clean it and then add sauce to it again and tried to warm it up some more?
I can see rinsing it if it fell on the floor and she figured the dirt may be sticking to the sauce.
If she’s really old than I would keep an eye out but its normal to get forgetful as we get older.

Two things to consider, I think:

1. You should definitely have a doctor see her and have some tests done. It could be something like multi-infarct dementia which involves a series of small strokes that basically go unnoticed but still can cause minor brain damage. It started to happened to my dad in the last year or year and a half of his life. He was pretty much mentally sharp until a few month after about 80, though he wasn’t quite as sharp as he once was but he went from being a man with a Ph.D in physical chemistry and a pretty good chemist to a man who couldn’t figure out how to make instant coffee in the microwave. My metaphor for it was that he was kind of of like a Christmas tree and every once in while one of the lights would flicker on and off and… then off. Forever. It’s important to find out what’s going on with her. There are different kinds of senile dementia with different treatments.

2. You should also consult with a doctor about your grandmother’s medications, what she’s taking, what combinations and dosages, and any changes in her medications that may have occurred when this started happening. My grandmother also had some cognitive problems that turned out to be medication related or problems that were at least exacerbated by her medications and were alleviated by changes in her medication. She did go on to have full blown Alzheimer’s years later but changes to her medications helped a lot.

Anyway, see if you can get her into a doctor for an evaluation and keep an eye on her.

That’s my two cents at least.

On a lighter note, I was initially worried that this question was some sort of euphemism.

flo's avatar

@Pandora yes but in her right mind, she would never think like that. She would know that the water would just move the dirt from the dirty area to the clean area, since it is greasy, and/or drive the dirt inward. She was way too smart for that. But like you indicate she might have been thinking what you mentioned at the time.

@lillycoyote thanks that is a lot more than 2 cents worth. It is not my gramma, it looks like her childrn are on top of it. I have sent them the link in your post.
