Can you name 3 great modern artists?

Asked by whitetigress (3129points) October 12th, 2011

They can be fine arts or pop art or whatever artists. Can you name their most popular pieces? What do you find most attractive about their work? Possible to reference some sources towards their work?

I too vote for Georgia O’Keefe, also Andrew Wyeth and Morris Louis, his Point of Tranquility is one of my favorites, I can look at it forever and be mesmerized.

Some of my favs:

Jean-Michel Basquiat
Robert Rauschenberg
Kiki Smith
Lee Bontecou
Kara Walker

But depending on how you define modern they might not count. I’m not sure how any of them are typically categorized in art history. Rauschenburg was post Abstract Expressionism, but I don’t know the name of the movement he was part of.

I forgot Egon Schiele and Aubrey Beardsley. Shame on me. Maybe not modern but totally badass.

My most favoritest artist is my husband though. There are a lot of kind of outdated examples of his work on his website. But I might be slightly biased. :)

Not clear whether you are defining as modern or if you are looking for only visual artists or other media as well.

Edit: “Not clear what you are defining as modern…”

So, the original description suggested that this question was just a test to see how aware we were of modern art and artists. Now that the details have been changed, I would like to request clarification on both “modern” and “artist.”

For my original answer, I stuck to visual and performing artists who are alive and still working just in case “modern” meant “contemporary” and not “between the years 1860 and 1970” (as it might be defined in a history of art class). If either category was intended more broadly, I would be interested to know before answering the new version of the question.

Ron English
Shepard Fairey
Mark Ryden.

The list goes on and on and on and on. There are more than plenty.

You can reference their work by using Google. All three have their own website. Cheers.
