What do I do about my nail being gone?

Asked by bluejay (1014points) October 22nd, 2011

I was attempting to peel a small portion off and the entire thing just peeled off… It doesn’t hurt or anything and it only has a little blood. It’s not even to dripping point, but I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t want small pieces of sock in it and have to take them out every night. I have no bandages. What do I do and how long should it take to regrow?

When my big toe finally lost its nail until it was fully healed where the nail came off I just put a big band aide on it covering it and keeping it clean from infection.

Small pieces of sock in it? What? lol

Wash it with warm, soapy water and put some antibiotic ointment on if you have any. Then, put a band aid on for a day or so. It will be just fine but will take about 4 months to grow back.

My nail got cut in half when I dropped a piece of plywood on my finger, and now the new one is growing back. As Coloma points out, it will take months to grow back.

If you are absolutely certain you have NO infection, wash the blood off of it, let it dry completely, and put New Skin on it. New Skin acts as a liquid bandage and will protect the tender area until your new nail comes in. Your other option is going without, which you said you don’t want, or a bandaid. You can buy it in most pharmacies, and is quite inexpensive. It smells like cloves. Don’t ever use it if you have any sort of infection, because it will seal the skin. Dob it on to smooth out the rough parts, and you’re good to go after it dries.
Other options are super glue or nail polish. The same rules apply.

With any of these options you will have to reapply if you soak in water.

Yeah there’s definitely no infection because I took a lighter to the toe… I don’t like peroxide. And I found a few stray bandages! Is it normal that around where the nail would be is white, like the skin of a popped blister?

Yeah, I’d say so, considering that it sounds like you BURNED it!

@snowberry lol that’s what I figured. I just don’t like peroxide and I know fire heat kills off bacteria!

When my toenail fell off last year, I went to my local nail place and had them attach a fake one to the nub underneath… sounds gross but worked beautifully. Good if you’re willing to get a monthly pedicure and have someone cut it down.

Wow this was only 2 months ago… It’s pretty much grown back fully. Thanks guys.

I have since regrown and peeled this nail completely off 3 times…
