How to register your home as a homestead?

Asked by livingchoice (553points) October 27th, 2011

Hello, a friend of mine told me that you could register your home as a homestead and have the cost of your property tax reduced. Has any one ever heard of / done this? If so how is it done. I’m in Wayne County, PA.

I was able to find this online. Has anyone ever completed one of these Homestead Declaration forms? http://www.homesteadus.com/Zcart/

Very interesting! This is the first I’ve heard of this.

I’ve always registered my homes. It’s very common in California, and recommended for all homeowners. Just fill out the forms you can find online.

@livingchoice…The services that the company you cited is for Homestead Declaration and not Homestead Exemption. Check this one instead: http://www.ehow.com/about_5394580_pennsylvania-homestead-tax-relief.html

Is there a homestead tax for Pennsylvania. From what I read Pennsylvania wasn’t included?

@njnyjobs in process of reading found this statement “Property taxes are based on the assessed value of your real estate. A homestead exclusion or farmstead exclusion reduces the assessed value of your property and, therefore, you owe less tax.” Do I ever want the assessed value of my property to be reduced?

Here the homestead @YARNLADY is talking about. That is different than what you are asking about. Where I live homeowners who meet certain criteria such as being disabled, being a senior citizen, or being a veteran with a disability. You can find out more about the programs by contacting the county assessor in your area.

Too late too edit! Folks who meet these criteria can get a homestead exemption to lower or eliminate their property taxes. There is an application process where they verify the information you provided. Typically there is a year or so time between your application and when the exemption kicks in.

I am not familiar with this, interesting.
Where I live ( in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern Ca. ) one can get an Agricultural permit for reduced water fees by planting fruit or nut trees on their property. This saves considerably on the high cost of water. Otherwise, this is news to me.

Most of us reside on 5 to 25 acre parcels and this means a big savings on water, including all the water it takes to maintain large livestock such as horses, cattle, sheep, goats, etc.

@livingchoice… yes, it is every homeowner’s desire for their property’s assessed value be reduced. Since property taxes are based on millage or percentage per thousand units, a lower basis for the tax due (assessed value) would result in lower property tax. Assessd value is not to be confused with your property’s market value, which is the basis of the equity in your property.

I filed a form with the county assessors office and got my property tax reduced 30% because I am disabled. I could have actually done the same thing with my Father due to his age, but the lady at the office said mine was the better option because I would probably outlive Dad. I’m not sure if that is the same thing as homestead, but is as close as I have ever done.

Go to your state’s website and go to the department of revenue. You fill out a form to claim homestead. Very simple.

This is an exemption that reduces property tax on your HOME—you have to live in the house.
