What are the reasons people don't do this if they have all the equipment?

Asked by Aster (20023points) October 27th, 2011

Why don’t more people live in tents? As per my question, if they have firewood, pots and pans, canned goods, a great sleeping bag and a strong, wind proof tent, charcoal for an alternative fire why would they ditch a tent for a motel in the fall? Motel living would cost a lot more and possibly be noiser.

Indoor plumbing and security.

Indoor plumbing, security, comfort.

You’re kidding, right?

Perhaps cost isn’t that much of a priority.

Rather than save a few bucks, they’d prefer to have convenience, security and comfort.

And winter is just around the corner :)

They don’t want to die?

I asked a homeless person one time, why he slept in cardboard box, rather than a tent? He first said he could not afford one and second, that he could not keep an eye on other humans and critters that would steal what little he had.

My answer is the same as this homeless person. Thieving people and critters.

Living inside a building is just better, that and there’s always the chance of bears.

Another problem is location. People don’t usually like others loitering on their property, let alone in colorful tents while setting up camp.

Cable television and Internet access, maybe? Showers are cool, too. I mean “warm”.

NO chance of dying and he had been INVITED to live on the property. There aren’t any bears and it was on 3 acres in a very quiet area. I’ll have to find out about the sanitary conditions part. This guy wouldn’t care about showers.

Yes, as @Prosb points out, location is an issue. You can’t pitch a tent just anywhere, like on the side of the road. You have to camp where it is legal to tent camp, either at a state park where camping is permitted or at a campground where tent camping is permitted.

@Aster Are asking about people in general, or why some particular person who was invited to live on someone’s property in a tent doesn’t want to?

Buttonstc's avatar

The way the OQ was asked made it sound as if it was just general.

But the recent response seems to indicate a specific person who is actually doing this now.

If that’s the case then, the only person who can provide the answer is the individual himself. All the rest of us can do is take wild guesses.

Ask him.

Sitting in a tent wearing a hair shirt and flogging one’s self with a Cat o’ nine tails. OMG—it doesn’t get any better!

lillycoyote's avatar

@ratboy Well, it could only be better made knowing that you will be surviving on a diet of crickets and purslane for the next god knows how many months! What could be better than that? :-)

Aster's avatar

@ratboy I’m laughing but I don’t know what a hair shirt is or why anyone would flog himself with a cat o’nine tails. It still was hilarious. I said he had pots and pans and the owner of the RV next to the tent would bring home groceries and possibly cook in the RV. They built a campfire often. I’m going to inquire regarding bathroom facilities. lol
