How many pictures do you take in a year? What do you do with them?

Asked by rpm_pseud0name (8208points) October 29th, 2011

Every portable gadget now comes with a camera built in. Phones boast about their lenses & megapixel count. Gaming devices flaunt their 3D picture taking abilities. Cameras are everywhere.

I’d guess that every jelly here has some sort of camera. Do you use it?

How many pictures do you take in a year & what do you do with those pictures?

(not sure if ‘posting on facebook’ should count as doing something with pictures.) ;)

Bought my new phone around the 1st of April and the latest photo has IMG520 as its number, so I guesstimate that it’ll be around thousand.
I send some of them to my girlfriend and some of them I use to post here or, like today, on Photobucket.

This past year I took less than 30 with my celly, kept only a handful since my current celly camera has shite for resolutiion. The pics usually get forwarded in emails to friends or shared on facebook.

I still use the disposable 35mm cameras, drop them off at wally world and get them put on a disc as well. I leave the actual photos right in the envelopes they come in. I might turn in 5–6 films a year. I haven’t yet owned a phone with a camera.

I only take pictures on major holidays and such. I’d guess I take around 50 pictures a year. I know it’s few, but I make sure to take ones that count. I don’t take snap shots.

I frame a few, but I post most online.

Since I I got my iPhone I take hundreds of pictures, for all sorts of reasons. I have a good bit of memory on the iPhone and it has a nice, HD camera, it’s just so easy to use it and so easy to send pics and videos off to people right from the phone and to transfer them to my computer. One thing I use it for now is when I am comparison shopping. E.g. I was looking for tile for several rooms in my house. I would use the phone to take pictures of any tile I was looking at, considering, and then take pictures of the shelf label that identified the name of the tile, the store SKU#, the model number and the price. It was a lot easier than taking notes. And I had a picture of the tile. Even if I took notes, it would always look at the info and think: Now which one was that? With the camera on the phone it’s so much easier.

I take thousands. I rarely print them and even more rarely look at them. I guess I figure they are being saved for posterity.
My trail camera takes about 200–400 per night. I keep maybe 4 or 5.

I do not take pictures with my phone.

800–1000 stored on the computer and a backup on flash drive

I’d say between one and two thousand pictures a year. I use the cell, the point and shoot, and sometimes the computer camera. Other members of the family use my camera as well as various others, too. I don’t know how many pictures they take. My son is trying to convince us to buy him a DSLR now, but since he last asked for and got an underwater video camera which he never uses, it is unlikely he will get a DSLR. Although my wife is interested, so she might want it. It won’t be my son’s though.

I used to lug around a Nikon SLR, several large lenses, as well as a Sony analog videocam. I was like a Sherpa, and I don’t understand why anyone would want to lug around that much stuff, but I guess they have never had experience doing so. So they don’t know what a pain it is.

Anyway, I like to take pictures and we most often look at them right after we take them, and then they go into cold storage until years later we just want to see them, or we are transferring them from one format to another, or, I suppose, if we have some project, like creating a physical photo album.

I average 3–5 pics a day…..I have taken as many as 200+ pics in a day.

Not nearly enough. I have a 12 megapixel Fujifilm camera and take a few hundred photos a year. I would take more, but I keep forgetting to keep it on my person. I have always wanted a better camera but can’t justify the purchase since I don’t use the one I currently own enough.

Like, two or three? I have a flip cell phone with a really bad quality built in camera. But I do have a few pics I took on it. This really cool looking wasp that landed on my arm not too long ago, and one pic of my roomate giving the finger to a can of soda. Also, a bad cut I got on my wrist from trying to open a taped up box with an Exacto knife. Shoulda taken the pictures when it was pissing blood, but I wasn’t thinking of that at the time. XD Last year I went to the old port and MontrĂ©al and took pictures of these huge ass ships. That was pretty epic. Except the photos are all small and grainy, so it never looks as awesome as it did when it happened lol.

Thousands.
I delete a lot. Facebook. Deviantart. My background. ETC.

Not very many. I never seem to have my (decent, digital) camera with me when I want it… I never remember to take it to events. My cell camera takes fairly crappy pictures, but I use it to capture images of things I want to make, funny things I want to show my kids, and in a pinch, pictures that just need to be taken (like the kitten we found on our porch). I am terrible about uploading them, though. So, mostly they just sit in my devices. :/

I know I’ll regret it later, but I don’t take many at all…I realized a few weeks ago, going through my digital pictures folder, that I don’t have a single photo of myself at age 16. I think, for me, not taking photos goes hand in hand with not feeling good about life or about myself. Age 16 I probably didn’t want my photo taken because I was really ill and I looked awful it was a rough year and I didn’t want to remember it.

I probably take more photos of things I’ve made that I wanna show off on the internet (jewelry, mostly) than I take of people, which I know I will be mad about later. I put my best photos on Flickr and on my digital picture frame but I don’t do much else with them.

woodcutter's avatar

@Mariah what kind of camera will take proper pics of jewelry? I want something that will do close ups but the kicker is it can’t cost me a fortune.

Mariah's avatar

@woodcutter Oh damn, wish I could help you. I just try and coerce my seven-year-old Canon Powershot to do its best. Macro mode is a must have. I do quite like the Canon brand. That’s about all I know though, sorry!

rpm_pseud0name's avatar

@woodcutter Not sure if this helps.. but (for reference) I have an old Canon S2 IS that I bought many years ago for casual shooting. Here is a sample picture of 9mm paint bullets I took some time ago. Image was sized down a bit for imgur standards. I am not a professional.. just a camera with a desk lamp & big piece of white paper. I’m sure if you had proper studio equipment & knew what you were doing.. this camera could take decent macro shots of jewelry. You can get this camera for about $90 now. Can you believe I paid $500 for it when it came out?! Ugh.

I honestly have no idea what the total would be. I can tell you I’ve taken at least 100 this week. Photography is a passion of mine. I was a photographer for the yearbook my last two years of high school, and I wish I would have studied photography in college. Instead, I wasted my money on a degree to become a travel agent. thanks to the internet, there isn’t much of a need for us anymore :(

I like to keep all my photos on the SD cards, and many turn up on Facebook.

I also have boxes and boxes of photographs taken from when we didn’t have a digital camera.

woodcutter's avatar

@Mariah No, that’s fine. I have heard the most recommendations of powershots, something small. I don’t want a huge set up that will make my head blow up from learning how to work it.

@rpm pseudOname Those look pretty good. I want to get pics of some pieces my wife made from quilling art and they are full of detail that an average camera would loose. I want to take shots of my scale models before they are destroyed somehow and the macro will bring out details that is hard to see with just eyes. Pics like these found on Track-Link http://www.track-link.net/gallery/8004 would tickle me to no end if I could get my own. I understand what you mean about new products like cameras costing an arm and a leg to find them cheap as dirt later but it’s a good thing…for me anyway, except the time when I bought the first Sony Walkman right after they came out. Paid well over 100 bucks for that to see that other people were later turning out similar things for 20 bucks that were as good. Still have that old Walkman but the headphones fell apart soon after I got it.
