What would go well to serve with Shrimp Gumbo?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) November 4th, 2011

I’m having a dinner party tomorrow night and am planning on serving shrimp gumbo.

What would go well with it? Salad? (What kind?) Rolls or bread? (What kind?) Anything else you can think of?

I am not looking for reams of links from any one person just your best thoughts.

I can’t have shrimp…but when I think of hot soup, I think of warm breadsticks with butter served alongside.

Since it’s Southern maybe people would prefer buttermilk biscuits though?

I’d go with a simple endive salad with cherry tomatoes and some cheese crumbles.

I know you like iced tea, so I’d serve that and offer hot water for hot tea (I usually have out an urn or hot water this time of year when we do a party or dinner).

What are your plans for dessert?

@SpatzieLover Endive! Good idea! I haven’t decided about dessert yet. I was thinking of something with pears (for fall, you know). Perhaps a pear tart?

Rice. Usually dirty rice.

@bkcunningham Yes, I was planning on serving with rice. I had not thought about doing dirty rice although I could . . .

Garlic bread, or a really good Artesian bread and salad sounds great to me!
Maybe do a sorbet or fresh fruit dessert to offset all the spiciness.

What time are you serving? ;-)

Mmmm…Pear tart would be divine with that menu.

I always do a hearty crusty bread, and a very light pale lettuce salad to act as a bit of a palate cleanser during the meal.

I would suggest a crusty loaf of French bread served with one or several flavored butters such as this Herb Butter

Then serve a salad of Butter Lettuce with Bacon, Tart Cherries and Roquefort Vinaigrette

And make a dessert of Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce

Wild rice is a nice change from regular rice.

I would keep everything else simple – like white rice or white mashed, but not too mashed, potatoes. A simple leafy salad – and lots of good rolls. Individual, over-sized rolls.
