I don’t understand this whole pageant thing.

To expand on this, I did a quick Google and it seems that they are owned by different companies. Wikipedia says that Miss Universe is the most televised in the world. I don’t have regular TV, so I’ve never watched these things. I’ve only seen spoofy movies and clips of that freaky child pageant show on TLC. Can people compete in both? I guess this is a silly question that I didn’t really think through. Fluther won’t let me delete it, though.

Different sponsors. Different organizations put them on. If you look at beauty contests through out the U.S., every state has at least one; many have quite a few. They are mostly to help draw a crowd, I think. Then the crowd can be preached to about whatever product they are selling. It’s all hucksterism.

Miss World I think is slightly older than Miss Universe.
Miss World sponsored in Britian so contestants must live there a year when they win the title.
Miss Universe originally sponsored in the US and now sponsored by Trump
There is also a Miss Earth that is sponsored by Britian.
Miss Universe has about 75 to 85 countries competing.
Miss World has about 128 countries or more competing. So I would think Miss World trumps Miss Universe since there are more contestants.

Miss Universe has to compete against air-headed bimbos from other planets, whereas Miss World doesn’t. ;-)

I use to consider pageants stupid but then my daughter reminded me that many of these girls come from small countries and towns where there is little in the way of networking. Even if they don’t win, many get to make connections that they otherwise wouldn’t be able too. Many of these girls are top of their class in education and both pageants usually require some sort of community work.
At least for Miss World and Miss Universe these are college women who usually have a full life in other areas and are set on being the best they can be and move forward.
I mean in todays world you can come out of college with Masters and that does not guarantee a job. You need connections just to get your foot in the door and you have to usually start at the bottom. If throwing on a bathing suit and marching in front of the whole world helps put you in front of the millions of people your age competing with you, than why not.
Plus if you win, you get money for college, free room and board for a year, lots of free prizes and gifts and to travel around the world for one year.
