What are some good songs in Dutch?

Asked by gememers (445points) November 10th, 2011

This is a matter of opinion, of course. I am open to any genre.

My family is German and Dutch. My Grandmother used to sing a children’s song to us in (I think, Old Dutch) I have no idea how it’s spelled so I’m going to write it the way it sounds. “Opta Managa anga lopa nocht clina, clina, clina, _________ copa.” I was told it means, “come little horses, cimb, climb, climb up to _______’s head. She walked her fingers up our arms to our shoulders and up to our heads as she sang it. It was cute… It was passed down even to my grandkids

First Dutch song I ever learned!!

One two three four
make a hat, make a hat
one two three four
make a paper hat.

Is it gone, your paper hat
make a cardboard hat instead
one two three four
make a paper hat.

One two three four
make a hat, make a hat
one two three four
make a paper hat.

If the hat just doesn’t fit
put it in the glass cabinet
one two three four
make a paper hat.

Een, twee, drie, vier
hoedje van, hoedje van
een, twee, drie, vier
hoedje van papier.

Heb je dan geen hoedje meer
maak er één van bordpapier
een, twee, drie, vier
hoedje van papier.

@EmptyNest
Your song closely resembles a song game many Dutch still sing to their babies:

“Daar komt een muisje aangeslopen…
... zomaar in ##child’s name## nekkie gekropen.”

It means… something like
“there is a little mouse, slowly crawling….
....into the neck of my little darling.”

During the song your fingers will walk up the tummy of the baby to end up tickling her/his neck.

See a little movie of a parent playing this rime game with their baby here.

BTW
I think from what you wrote, the song your grandma sung would read something like “Op de manege aangelopen”

The rest I have to guess, most likely… klimmen… klimmen klimmen en in een galopje naar je kopje.

It means “a horse comes walking onto the riding school. Climbs and climbs and climbs and then runs for your little head.” It would be a guess though.
