Is there any particular folklore about a cat turning up at your house and not leaving?

Asked by Mat74UK (4662points) November 14th, 2011

She’s been here for over a fortnight now. At first I thought she was a neighbours but when I went knocking they all thought she was ours.
I’ve now been out and bought food and a litter tray and she’s settled in.
I checked the local shops and nobody is missing a small cat/large kitten.

Maybe you’re a witch. And the cat is your familiar, it is there to tell you to get ‘back on the path’.

Congratulations, you have just been adopted.
I have heard some cats will pick their humans, but don’t know any folklore about it.

The youngest son of the third daughter in your family will be covered in black spots one week from Thursday.

Nope, you’ve been chosen to be a parent to a lonely furbaby. Take good care of her!

The Cat Came Back

Please take the kitty to a vet to make sure that it has been fixed and vaccinated. All of our cats found us. They must have known that we couldn’t live without them : )

@Kardamom – I shall give it a little while longer then yes, she’ll get “fixed” and vaccinated!

Congratulations on the new addition to your family. I don’t know much about cat folklore but I do know that cats bring much love and happiness to homes where they choose to reside.

Cats are survivors and they like to choose which digs they will reside in. Primarily if the food is always there, they aren’t going anywhere soon.

She’s your little cougar. lol

Maybe you need a friend and she needs a home. Sounds like a fine arrangement to me.

My little panther just came in from escorting me through the real Mountain Lion zone over here. Never know what’s lurking around my barn after dark. Some really big cats have shown up on my doorstep. lol

Cats seem to be able to select humans who will love them and care for them. I’ve had any number of cats just show up on my doorstep and calmly saunter inside when I opened the door. These selective cats make the best pets because they want to be with you. I consider it high compliment. : ))

This is no lie..I was jokingly telling my wife I wish we could get us a Cat..( I love Cats )...I was out on the front porch a couple days later when a Cat walked up and jumped into my lapp. It found a home.
My wife told me to be careful what I wish for.

@dappled_leaves hahahahaha! Love it. Cats know better than to come near me. Stray dogs are another story.

We got a new cat guest early this year. He was a kitten who looked like he was getting the crap beat out of him from the other toms in the area so he set up camp under the work table on our porch where the dogs could cover him. Thats pretty smart, knowing none of his enemies would dare get close to the house with those two huge dogs out there. He became good buddies with those dogs. It took most of the summer for him to let me near him. A lot of bribery came into play and that cat loves his food.

Only one cat? I live in the Finger Lakes Area of New York. My house backs onto a state park where people drop off cats. I’ll never understand that. I’ve rescued 14 cats over the past few years, got them shots, fixed, adopted out 11 of them and kept 3. Winter is coming and I’m constantly checking for new visitors. A serious new problem has emerged. Fisher Cats (Weasels) have come to the Finger Lakes. They’re Weasels that present a danger to cats and other small mammals. I’ve written Letters to the Editor about this and the drop off of cats has dropped considerably, and, there are less indoor out door cats around, but all it takes is just one…........
