What are the three basic principles you live by?

Asked by Jellie (6492points) November 15th, 2011

First of all: HI FLUTHER. I haven’t been around for the longest time. I have missed the collective.

I haven’t been busy as much as I have been just trying to sort my own head out. I was wondering earlier today that a man without some basic principles in life is an animal. We have to have a minimum discipline no matter what to function proper and live a healthy life. Mine are:

1. Treat people how you would like to be treated.
2. Be kind to animals.
3. Stand up for the oppressed.

First do no harm.

Be honest and own your own stuff.

Don’t be a bystander. (That one is the hardest for me.)

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with my God.

@Judi I have always loved that quote.

@jnabb, Yeah, I probably should have put it in quotes. Can’t be plagiarizing Micah

1. Humans are animals and so listening to and, at times, acting on basic instincts is neither inherently good nor inherently evil.

2. My family is large and includes those whom I protect and who protect me, in all possible ways.

3. Regrets mean nothing except being unable to learn from and escape your past.

I’m sure a lot of people will take issue with the first one. I will happily explain if you pm me and wish for me to elaborate. :)

The only ones that occur (as a set of three) are:

See no evil
Hear no evil
Speak no evil

But I’m not sure that I really like those.

I prefer:
Never complain; never explain. (Hard to live up to, though.)
And pretty much the entirety of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Self Reliance. Which should be more than enough to suit.

I think I have more than 3.

1. Do no harm. Unless someone really deserves it, but NEVER to animals.
2. Try to leave my world, or my little place in the world, better than I found it.
3. Eat dessert.

Live honestly and with integrity.
Always be determining in doing your best.

Do the best I can for myself while doing the least amount of harm to others as I make my way.

This covers moderation, empathy and consideration. I try but don’t always succeed.
