It depends on how much you ingested…any idea?

Lung Cancer. You can actually detox it all out. Of course you’ll be strictly on a vegetable and fruit regimen.

And how did this happen? :-/

I’d check with a doctor, but, depending on the amount, and assuming you are larger than a Tuna fish, you will probably be okay.

… it was a suicide attempt… a good ¼ cup at least.

Mercury consumption can cause many illnesses. In serious case, it could cause death. Other possibility is nerve damage and you may get paralysed.

@King_Pariah

I hope you’re being sarcastically humorous, are you?

citizenearth's avatar

Well, no. Read some past events and case studies. For example, the mercury contamination in Japan about 60 years ago.

Agree with @Coloma, and where would you even get that much?

Liquid mercury is very poorly absorbed, even when injected directly into the bloodstream. It’s the safest form of mercury. Only about .01% gets absorbed by the digestive tract. Certain mercury compounds and mercury vapor are much, much more dangerous.

“The chronic effects of mercury vary from neurological system damage to organ damage as well as sensorial, emotional and psychological systems. Some of the most common symptoms include: inability to concentrate, short-term and long-term memory loss, depression, irritability, attention deficit, headaches, numbness of extremities, vision, hearing, taste, loss of smell, abdominal cramps, chest pain, allergies, irregular breathing, anorexia, fatigue, loss of appetite, dizziness, ringing of the ears, tremors, and convulsions just to name a portion of the conditions.

In some instances certain diseases are said to be linked to mercury poisoning. These include multiple sclerosis, ADHD, Alzheimer’s disease, and/or senile dementia.”

You can read about removing mercury from your body via chelation on the Web.

Does’nt Tuna have mercury in it?

King_Pariah's avatar

@XOIIO @Coloma kinda wish I could say it was. And I swiped it from a science department’s supply closet.

Per advice from @marinelife chelation therapy is the way to do it.
—and I’m glad you’re feeling better about yourself to stick around and be healthy !

My denturist and his buddy played with a bunch of mercury he stole when he was a kid. He is undergoing therapy to remove it from his system and repair his body.

When I was in college, someone supposedly committed suicide via mercury. Apparently they hung out in the shower and ended up vomiting blood all over the place before dying an extremely painful death.

After reading this article about mercury poisoning, I think I doubt the story. Theoretically, it is possible to kill yourself that way, but I guess it happens very rarely, and only in people with certain other conditions.
