Why do some people have so much stuff in their wallets?

Asked by Blackberry (33949points) November 22nd, 2011 from iPhone

I usually see older people with wallets bursting full of cards and papers. What is all that stuff?

Let me think…

My wallet contains my checkbook, balance book, Driver’s license, insurance card, Medicaid cards for myself and my son from when I was pregnant (they never expire so you have to hold on to them even if you don’t receive the benefits anymore), debit card, credit card, three store loyalty discount cards (grocery store, CVS, and Barnes and Noble), two gift cards (Barnes and Noble, Bass Pro Shops), a bunch of loose change, voter registration card, and a card with my passport information on it in case it goes missing.

Wow, that does sound like a lot.

My wallet is a thin tool box.
Let’s see… wire saw, straight razor, strip of snap off razors. nichrome wire, two pins needle, button battery, piezo disc, small capacitor, coil of wire, P-38 tool, benadryl, band-aids, a couple of hundred in cash, credit cards, driver’s license, health insurance card. No pictures.

I’m not that old (30’s) and I do this. I tend to hold on to wallets (like cell phones) for many years at a time and I’ll usually just transfer my pile of cards to the new wallet by instinct. My wallet isn’t packed but I was rather surprised to find an old driver’s license (my first) from 1989 burried in my newest wallet when I cleaned it out.

Things they gathered over the course of their lives ?

My wallet is tidy and organized, except for the stash of recent atm receipts. lol

I also like to keep my presidents all in a row. Respect your money!

I have all the usual stuff, DL, CC’s, bank card, roadside assistance card, grocery discount cards, but everything is organized and easily accessed.

I am not a clutter bug, at all. I toss anything that I don’t use, need.

I do not keep years worth of records, receipts, bills, other than car repairs, taxes and important documents.

Keep it simple I say. :-)

Haha dude! You should go on “Lets make a deal”..I think you need a purse, but, you’d come in handy for an emergency band aid. lol

Oops, I forgot: three low temp solder strips and strip of luminous material painted on the inside flap that will glow when exposed to UV.

@mazingerz88 I’ve been called Macgyver…

@Coloma The funny thing is, I actually use that stuff. It takes up virtually no space. Of course I have to remove it when I go on an airplane. But, most of the time I have it with me.

Hold on… I’ve got an answer for that right here in my wallet… somewhere.

I used to put ticket stubs and old fortunes from cookies, etc. My wallet was like George Costanza’s

But now I have a combo money clip and credit card sleeve. Much easier, lighter, and comfortable to carry.

My wallet is practically empty. I don’t carry much in my (huge) purse, either. I’m like that with most things in life, though. I like things to be simple and organized. Clutter gives me a headache. My husband’s wallet, however, is literally bursting at the seams. I think people collect a lot of things and never clear them back out. I guess, anyhow.

As a girl that shops pretty frequently, I’ve found that it’s mainly punch cards (sandwich and smoothie places, buy 10 get 1 free!), and, like, every store I go to on a frequent basis has a stupid club card with a barcode to scan, for points or discounts or whatever. Usually they’ll dangle some kind of offer to get your email/address.

I leave them at home and have them look up my info. Petco card, really!

Oh, and some old people are like my dad – he carries around stacks of peoples’ business cards because he won’t hassle with entering info into his phone.
