Is it safe to use Paypal on eBay? How does it work in terms of transaction?

Asked by SassyPink (284points) November 22nd, 2011

Two days ago, I’ve won an auction on eBay and I was trying to make a purchase for this item via debit. (This is the first time that I ever bid for something on eBay.) I tried to make the payment several times but it wouldn’t let me. Instead it showed me this following message:
“Your credit or debit card has been declined for this transaction; PayPal could not validate the card. Please validate.”

Then I later realized that the seller only accepts PayPal. I have never used PayPal service before and I’m not so sure how it works. Debit and credit card is all I can used to make the payment. I have no other options. I’m also little skeptical about using Paypal and how it charges or receives money. I was planning to create an account for it sooner so I could still make the payment in less than a week. If not, then I don’t know what kind of trouble that I might face with the seller or the website.

So what are the pros and cons of using Paypal? Could I still be able to delete my PayPal account later on once I’m done using it?

p.s. Sorry if there are some grammar mistakes, I’m in a little rush this afternoon and I have to go somewhere but I’ll be back.

I love paypal, you can transfer money between currencies really easily and you also don’t need your card on you to make a payment, you just need your email address and paypal password. Ive never had a problem with paypal, once there was a problem with my internet crashing half way through but they just put the money back in my account automatically and I had to buy the item again. Be careful of emails that say they are from paypal though, Paypal itself seems pretty safe but there does seem to be alot of scamming emails that claim to be paypal. I think that is the main problem with them,

You have to complete PayPals questionaire, which asks for your checking account number. PayPal is the go between you and a purchase. This is a security measure and it works. I have had PayPal for four years and no problems whatsover. You sell something and PayPal handles the rest. Also, for purchases.

I am reluctant to trust Pay Pal. I had a problem several years ago when someone used my information to set up a Pay Pal account & purchased several items. I ran into an absolute blank wall when I tried to contact anyone at Pay Pal with any authority to make corrections. It ultimately cost me my checking account (I had to close my old checking account & open a new one) & several hundred dollars. Usually on Ebay they will allow you to pay for a purchase with a credit card, you do not have to use Pay Pal.

I wish I could pay for everything through paypal. That way, only paypal would know my credit card numbers. I wouldn’t have to trust anyone else with those numbers. Discover allows you to generate a random number for each online purchase, which makes it hard for people to steal the number, and that’s good, too. But I would use Paypal if I were you.

I have used paypal over 100 times with no issues.

My only complaint is that recently they have put your funds into a hold after you are paid, for like 21 days.

I’ve used PayPal on Ebay since 2003 and have not had an issue yet.

I had a serious problem several years ago when someone got into my PayPal account and started charging items. It was resolved, but a scary situation nevertheless. They figured out my password, etc. and I had to make many changes to protect my credit and access to my financial transactions. Since then I only use one credit card and skipped using Paypal. If I go on ebay and the seller only accepts PayPal, I write to him/her and say I won’t use PayPal. Many have taken my credit card directly, the ones that didn’t, I just wouldn’t buy from them. My credit’s great, and I don’t want to take any chances of a future problem no matter how slim that chance might be.

I think PayPal is excellent. I always use it when the option is available. As was said above, then only they know my credit card numbers instead of all the dozens of folks I do business with all over the internet.

I think it is great.
I do not have to reveal my bank account number, and I do not have a credit card, so paypal is ideal.
Sometimes at other places it does not work though, because the seller has paypal ask for a credit card number even though it could just as well work with direct debit.

As of the last couple years, ebay sellers are essentially required to accept PayPal only – ebay “allows” them to take alternate forms of payment if the buyers broaches the subject first, but the seller is not allowed to suggest it in their listing or in email contact with their buyer. Sellers have been suspended in the past for breaking these rules.

Of course, ebay owns paypal, so it’s to their financial benefit to enforce a monopoly.

eBay developed PayPal as as a secure payment mechanism.
PayPal is owned by eBay.
Trust eBay trust PayPal.
I do.

I’ve used PayPal for years and trust them more than I do the security on my own machine. I’d say the most likely place a hacker would snag your PayPal credentials when you log in is by somehow tricking you into downloading malware that feeds back mouse position and keyboard strokes to the hacker.

You might want to contact the seller and explain that you have to open a PayPal account. It takes 3 to 4 business days for a bank transfer to arrive at PayPal. You may be abple to fuind the account with your Debit card, but if they want the account verified, that also takes perhaps a week. You might not make it in time.

Also, note that once you have an account, you can get a PayPal debit Master Card and they actually give you cash rewards for using it as a credit card. And when dealing with people you aren’t sure you can trust, you can generate a PayPal one time credit—card number. It is only valid for that one transaction. If somebody tries to use it again, they get nowhere.

PayPal is the king of online purchases.

Hello, everyone. I’m back. Thanks for all of your helpful answers. I though it was gonna be more complicated. But I guess I’ll give it a try.

SassyPink's avatar

@MagsRags I thought so. For me, it has been a while since I last brought anything from eBay. I rarely used it. I remember only shopping there once or twice and I didn’t have to use PayPal then. I guess it’s now a requirement…

Glad to hear the positives even though my experience wasn’t. It’s always wise to check things out. Here’s a very good source http://www.consumeraffairs.com/online/paypal_01.html Best of luck in your endeavors.

When one gets a “we need to update your records” email from paypal, how to know if it is really the site or a scammer?

ragingloli's avatar

@smilingheart1
You call them/mail them and ask. But chances are, it is most likely a scam.

ETpro's avatar

@smilingheart1 If the email comes addressed to Dear Paypal user of any name other than the one registered in your account, it is definitely a scam. Even if it looks legit, NEVER click on a link in an email and enter sensitive log in information on PayPal.com or any site where you keep information you don’t want hacked. Instead, go to the site by entering its URL in the address bar, log in, and see if it is actually asking you to update something. While you’re there, might as well check that all your personal info is still up to date. Always surf safe.

The only con I can think of is that there are fees for receiving money. For making purchases, I love Paypal.
