What could a weird lump in leg be that I've had for 6 years?

Asked by tan235 (877points) November 28th, 2011

So not really to concerned but thought I’d ask to see if anyone has heard of this or has something similar.
I went to the doctor the first time I got it and she said it was nothing but didn’t say what it was – that was 6 years ago and it’s still there, I vaguely remember her saying if it’s still there in 6 months to go back… I’m assuming it’s nothing sinister as it has been 6 years.
It almost disappeared but now being pregnant it seems to have come back.
It’s hard to touch and feels like a tiny ball half the size of my finger nail, if i poke it with a needle it bleeds like an ingrown hair does, sometimes it hurts but that’s only when I poke it – anyone have any idea?
Lipoma, calcium deposit, some weird uncolored mole, the distinguishing factor is that it bleed a whole heap when I pierced it and it’s slightly redder than my skin!

ok thanks!

It’s probably a cyst. If you’re concerned, have your doctor or a dermatologist check it. And for God’s sake, stop poking the damn thing!

I had a cyst that almost disappeared when I had a hysterectomy, and now has come back as my estrogen has returned a bit. I use bio identical hormones and have a bit of a compliance problem. My family knows ling before me when I haven’t taken them for a while. I usually remember when my cyst shrinks.

Maybe it’s a teratoma (kidding).

It could also be a condition called dermatofibroma. The only way to know for sure is to follow up with a physician.

It sounds like a ganglion cyst from the description. I had one one on the top of my foot where the cops broke it. (The little bones on the top of the foot take as little as five pounds of pressure to break, and the cops like to stomp on your foot when they’re doing “punch-outs” with their riot shields to try and knock you down.)

@SmashTheState that sounds insane! Are you ok after that!?
far out…. will check all of the above possibilities and will go and get it looked at again.

@syz teratomas are horrifying!

I think you’ve found it @Kayak8

looks like it but not as red!

@tan235 The cyst went away on its own after a while. I went to the doctor because it was pressing on a nerve and causing me incredible amounts of pain. The doctor said he could remove it, but odds were good it would come back again, so I should just let it go away on itsown. And it did go away, but it killed the nerve first. I didn’t have any sensation on the top of one of my toes for years, and it’s still not as sensitive as the other toes. In the old days, they treated ganglion cysts by smashing them with a heavy book, usually a bible.

far out sounds insane, I“m glad it’s gone.

Do you think if this ‘thing’ were dangerous I would know by now?
Reading about Dermatofibroma now I“m worried it may be a rare skin cancer!!

Probably was a lipoma http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipoma Usually doesn’t need treatment, but if another should come your way, always check with your doctor.

tan235's avatar

@comity I still have it – I did show it to a doctor originally and she said it was nothing – but now I’m paranoid

I had what they called a fatty tumor in my arm (I am guessing that is is what everyone is calling a Lipoma), it took years but it finally went away.

Years ago, I had a benign lymphoma once (similar to a lipoma but a lot bigger) in my leg. I had to have it removed surgically with the doctors and the nurses and the sterile room full of medical gear and the general anesthesia and a couple of nights in hospital afterward…

tan235's avatar

Just in case anyone came back to see what it was it was a dermatofibroma!! And the doctor was not worried about it at all so yay thanks guys for all your help x

@tan235 I knew it! I typically refrain from internet diagnoses, but I had a hunch . . .
