I’m fairly certain I’m guilty of doing it! I tend to be loquacious. Sorry.

I think long answers a good because they add complexity to the answer and a background instead of just a “random thought” with no reason

Sure, I’ve gotten some long answers. I see more short than long answers, but occasionally a long answer will appear. They appear to make better sense though. (Unlike this one) The longer the answer, the more info in it. Since I’m writing a really long answer about long answers, than this long answer does not contain much info. It is a useless long answer that I am answering this question with. Sometimes short answers make more sense than long answers. I also agree with Shrubbery And think that long answers add complexity but often can make the answer confusing. :-)

I read the long texts 1) if the subject interests me and 2) more importantly, if there are regular breaks in the text and 3) if the answer is in predominantly standard English.

A long blur of unclear, repetitive, and childish sentences sends me far, far away.

My apologies Mtl_zack if I’ve been long-winded in the past. :0)

Yes, i have gotten longer answers. As the saying goes, it’s quality not quantity! However, I have nothing against long answers, so long as they are well-written and insightful. In some cases it can show that the person has put effort into answering your question. However, I do find answers that go on and on without getting their point across effectively to be a bit tedious of a read.
I better stop there, before this answer is one of them!

Thanks, Shi. I glanced at it but stopped when my eyes started to cross. There were a number of similar answers from the good old days. Kevbo asked a terrific question about relative vs. absolute morality. I can never find it. Kev: are you out there?

came up when i searched it =)... here

Here’s Kevbo’s question from 8 months ago – 58 answers – few of them short.

In addition to masses of text, there were huge verbal fisticuffs, lots of name calling, public and private apologies…all very exciting. Of course, we never resolved the issue and question came up many more times. But we agreed to not use the example of the woman asking, “Honey, do I look fat in this?”

@Oo – we overlapped, apparently. g

Three of my favorite words are fustian, bombastic and orotund.

@shilolo and 0o Niques o0 Thanks for picking me up. I have now read the FAQ.

Gail, you beat me to it! I was going to say bombastic as well!
