Are intestines particularily innervated? Why?

Asked by syz (35938points) December 5th, 2011

I wound up in the emergency room this morning after eight hours of some of the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. The doctor is unconcerned, and sent me home on immodium and hyoscyamine.

What’s the evolutionary benefit to such debilitating pain?

I don’t want to scare you, but my cousin went to the ER for severe abdominal pain. They gave her pain pills and sent her home. That night she died. I think the doctors decision was based on the fact that she had no insurance and was overweight. If you are still in pain, talk to someone else. (This happened about two years ago.)

I would seek a second opinion. There is no reason for you to have such pain without cause. I would go to a specialist.

This happened to me, too, and I missed almost a whole week of work here because of it! I don’t know what the deal is, but it does seem to me that they are particularly delicate systems, compared to all of our other body parts. They act up so damn often. Stupid intestines. In any event, they must have a ton of pain receptors (is that the word I want?). Maybe so we’ll know if we’ve eaten something poisonous.

Hope you feel better quickly!

I hope he ruled out appendicitis?

I’m guessing it’s the same as any other pain: to alert you something’s wrong.

Hope you’re feeling better. Intestinal pain sucks.

ETA: Here’s a somewhat related question I asked a while back; maybe some of the answers there could help you.

The intestines are enervated such that paristalsis can occur . . .

What tests were you given? Did they rule out appendicitis? Kidney stones? Gall stones? Pain is always caused by something, and if the doctors couldn’t make a diagnosis, you need to find out what’s going on inside you. And pretty quick if the pain was as severe as you say!!!

@HungryGuy I swear, we in the veterinary field do a much better job than md’s. After (by the time he saw me) 10 hours of severe abdominal pain, the doctor touched me with a stethoscope – and that’s it. No physical exam, no palpation, no bloodwork, no x-rays, no ultrasound.

I feel better today, though not normal, so I’ve got an appointment with my regular doctor.

Damn, that is pathetic. Some ER docs are idiots. I had one tell me my symptoms were no big deal once. I’d be dead now if I hadn’t sought a second opinion.

Severe abdominal pain that randomly disappears can be caused by an inflamed appendix bursting, which is an emergency. Glad you’re going to be seen today. Good luck!

@syz I have always wished that my vets were my GPs.

@syz – OMG! That’s scary! You should have at least been given an ultrasound to rule out kidney or gall stones. They released you, and you could have had a punctured colon. If so, the resulting infection could have been fatal within hours. Jeez!
