My macbook pro's airport is acting stupid. Help!

Asked by BoyWonder (811points) December 6th, 2011

I bought a refurbished macbook pro not too long ago and it’s been working fine up to a point. For awhile now, I noticed that at times, the airport will stop working. At the top right corner, the wifi will turn off and the symbol will look as though I turned it off. When I try to select the option of turning it back on, it won’t come on. I have to restart or shut the computer down for it to come back on again. How do I fix this?

First off, be sure you’ve downloaded any software updates that may help. If that doesn’t do it, try and create a new user and see if it’s the same there. You can also try booting into safe mode (read here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455). Possibly even better, if you have the chance, boot into Windows and see how it acts there.

If it’s behaving fine under another user or in safe mode, you have ruled out the possibility of this being a hardware error. From there, try to figure out what’s different between your user account and the newly created one to see what software may be causing this.

If it IS the same regardless of user/safe mode/OS, chances are very large that your airport card is bad. I’m not certain but I do believe these are separate from the motherboard and thus can be exchanged without replacing the entire machine… so, shouldn’t make you completely sad in terms of cost.

Best wishes

i tried another user, same thing…safe mode, same thing. I also tried plugging in my ethernet wire when my connection drops, same deal. I’m convinced that I need a new airport card. Thanks so much for your insight. I was ready to throw my laptop out the window. Can I buy the part and have someone at the Genius bar install it for me (after they diagnose the problem of course)?
