Being as I’ve only read one “fantasy” series, I can only recommend the Icewind Dale trilogy.

The Dresden Files is a great series. I find Jim Butcher’s writing style very entertaining, and the stories are great as well, if modern-day wizards are your thing.

The Baroque Cycle is also well done. I got it in the first-printing (three hardcover volumes) but it is now eight books. Those three hardcovers are >900 pages each! That should keep you going if you are into historical fiction.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward.

I read a few pages from “A Game of Thrones”, and it seems something I can get into. Might start reading the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series during the winter break.

Harry Potter is the obvious answer, but I’m also a big fan of the critically underrated Prydain Chronicles. Also, Bone is one of my all-time favorites, it ranks up there with HP in my mind.

The Warlock of Gramarye series by Christopher Stasheff.

The Dragons of Pern Series by Anne McCaffrey.

For fantasy series, The Belgariad is pretty awesome. If you like vampires and violence, Necroscope is some epic business.

Oh, I haven’t read them in years, but there is the Barnabas Collins series of vampire tales.

@Michael_Huntington I’d recommend it. I’m almost done with Game of Thrones—it’s pretty great :)

Ah, another older series—“A Wrinkle in Time” series by Madeline L’Engle.

I also liked the “Series of Unfortunate Events” by Lemony Snicket

Better late than never, eh?

Another vote for Wheel of Time, A Song of Ice and Fire (my wife add’s a vote there too), The Dresden Files, and the Icewind Dale trilogy.

More recommendations:

Malazan Book of the Fallen, Steven Erikson (ten books)
The Dark Elf trilogy, R.A. Salvatore (read before Icewind Dale trilogy)
The Culture Series, Ian M. Banks (connected by setting not characters, but then I’ve only read three so far)

And one that’s recently been recommended to me: The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson. I know nothing about it other than a buddy said I’ll be getting the first book for Christmas.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King

If you enjoy children’s lit, try Lloyd Alexander’s the Chronicles of Prydain (The Black Cauldron, The High King, Taran Wanderer, etc.).
