I think it will be effective only in causing civil unrest. We tried banning alcohol, and we got organized crime and still had alcohol.

Now, would you consider me racist if I questioned how a nation that does most of our tech support and actually produces some of the greatest minds in the IT industry can know so little about the Internet? Is it merely that, like us here in America, technological illiteracy is a prerequisite for being elected to office?

I’d have to know more about it and this is the first I’ve heard of it. India is a democracy. Does Communications Minister Kapil Sibal, who is mentioned in the article, have the authority to institute a ban on certain internet content? I would imagine not. He’s the one who seems to be complaining and I don’t know what the mentioned talks with internet providers have included or how far along the the process is and whether there is support from any of India’s other leaders. Can something like this be accomplished merely by regulation or would it have to be legislated? I don’t know.

If the culture wants junk mixed in with valuable information, then the culture will figure out a way to to get it. The government does not dictate the culture, current popular opinion notwithstanding. The culture happens in spite of government. If content that is degrading to the culture is available on the internet, the culture will either accept it, or reject it. If it accepts it, it does so at it’s long term peril. The government cannot stop a civilization’s gradual decadence. Only the individual’s values can influence the health of a civilization.
