Ideas for a birthday treat for a class?

Asked by Blueroses (18256points) December 7th, 2011

We are adults and ⅓ of the class does not eat sugar. One of my favorite classmates has a birthday tomorrow and I want to bring an easy-to-eat treat to celebrate.

I want something low-sucrose, fun, easy to make, cheap ingredients. I know my creative foodie jellies will come through with something awesome.

I love sausage, cheese and crackers. Pancakes with choice of spreads come to mind. Tortilla roll-ups of ham, cream cheese and pickles. I’m going for a snack…

Sugar-free angel food cake with fruit toppings of your choice.

Cheese, crackers and other savoury things should go down a treat. I agree with @DaphneT on this. You can always make it go further with some vegetable nibbly things. You need Le Kardemom!

Three simple words: hookers and cocaine sandwiches and lemonade.

@bob_, you are such a party starter.

Wheat crackers with pineapple cream cheese
Cheese sticks
popcorn with butter and parmesan
bite size apple with drizzled honey

Go savory, not dessert.

Hummus and pita chips.

Fresh tortilla chips and gaucamole (most Mexican restaurants have this to go) and/or one or 2 different salsas, one red and one green. If you want to make the guacamole here’s an easy delicious Recipe and here is a Pico de Gallo Salsa and one for Fresh Green Tomatillo Salsa and one for Red Guajillo Chile Salsa

A cheese tasting platter, with at least 3 different kinds of cheese served with either crackers like Triscuits or sliced baguettes. What I usually do is get the hunks of cheeses and cut half of the cheese into cubes or slices and leave the other half intact so everybody can see what it looks like (then you have a few cheese knives for the rest, once they eat the pre-cut pieces). I would suggest something like a sharp cheddar, a gruyere Swiss, maybe a soft goat cheese, a blue cheese like Point Reyes Blue Stilton or Humbolt Fog Stilton or my personal favorite Trader Joes White Stilton with Cranberries. You want each of the cheeses to have a different color and texture. I got a really cute inexpensive plastic platter with sections at Big Lots and it has a lid that covers the whole platter.

I knew she would have lots of suggestions. @Kardamom. Food Queen of Fluther.

I went with homemade pumpkin cookies and a veggie/hummus tray – also a side of homemade Ranch dressing for people who think hummus is suspicious. The hummus was gone before anything else, much to my surprise.

We don’t have Trader Joe’s here, but now I really want one @Kardamom
