Who is the greatest female singer of all time?

Asked by saint (3975points) December 10th, 2011

Lots of candidates I suppose.
Edith Piaf
Judy Garland
Aretha Franklin
Patti Lupone
Madonna
Lady Gaga

Personally, I say it is Pat Benatar. She is a half a generation before me, but nobody I have ever heard does the heavy lifting that she did way back when. But what do I know?

Isaac Singer’s daughter Betty who gave her daddy the idea for the modern sewing machine by innocently asking, “Daddy, why isn’t there a machine that can do the work of both a seamstress and a tailor without all the unseemly needy human being stuff?”.

Anywho…I vote for Dinah Washington.

@cprevite I would not know Dinah Washington from Britney Spears. But went on line and checked it out. You may have a point there. I also discovered Brook Benton there too. How did I miss that?

@saint: Ooh, I’m glad you checked out Dinah. If you get yourself some of her music, I can almost guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

I will grant you the short list would include:

Edith Piaf
Judy Garland
Aretha Franklin

May I say the others you list fall far short, and the list should continue:

Billie Holiday
Barbra Streisand
Linda Ronstadt

For me,

Karen Carpenter—- Have never heard a voice like hers before, and have never heard a voice like hers since. One in a trillion.

Teresa Teng—- Perfect tone and pitch, the best controlled voice I have ever heard from a female singer.

Just about all the black American singers. They have heavenly voices!

It’s all about Barbra Streisand for me.

I would also include Aretha in my list.

In addition, I’d select pre-Bobby Brown Whitney Houston.

It would depend on the genre for me. But on my list is Mary Chapin Carpenter. Not only her voice, but her talent for song writing and her skills at playing musical instruments.

Ladies and Gentleman, Ms Lena Horne

While I love Lena and this song there are countless “best” female singers in my book. I might be able to pick one from each genre, like say, Patsy Cline for country, but I sincerely doubt it. Anyway, fun question.
