Mistletoe: Is it right above our heads?

Asked by jazmina88 (11652points) December 13th, 2011

I look up in the winter barren trees and see clumps up there. I know some of these clumps are birds nests, is the rest of it mistletoe? Do we shoot it out of there like a turkey?

Are you looking for someone to kiss? I’m confused.

No, learning about the plant.
But if you wanna, pucker up!

When I lived in Florida I’d see it in oak trees. You could always tell it apart because it was a more yellow green compared to oak leaves. Also it stayed green through the winter when the oak shed it’s own leaves, though this may not be the case in colder climes. Up close the leaves are thick, round and waxy.

Might be a squirrels nest

You can tell it from bird’s nest because of it’s ball-like shape and it’s green color.

When growing up in California, the local Christmas tree lot would sell mistletoe. It was fresh picked by the crew that was bringing trees down every morning ( from the the mountain around Mt Baldy). They would climb into the oak trees in the afternoon and then load the cut Christmas trees onto the truck before dark.
