What do you think of the Congressman's attack on Michele's bum?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) December 22nd, 2011

“Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) was overheard at Reagan National Airport on Wednesday saying, “She lectures us on eating right while she has a rather large posterior herself.” Source

How dare he? How has the first lady’s ass become a target of public comment?

I think what really fries my shorts is the fact that the Congressman is quite tubby himself with a double chin!

How typical…....The ugly fat guy criticising the normal woman for not having a flat butt, but it’s so asinine it doesn’t even warrant a response. Although these types of comments go on all over the place, it shows how petty some people are. He was just a person that was caught saying it. It’s like a jealous man or woman judging the mate of someone they like/used to date. It’s sad and their insecurity/ignorance is beaming out of them.

Dutchess_III's avatar

What an idiot! What a hypocrite. That’s the platform the Repubs will probably run on…Michele’s ass.

LuckyGuy's avatar

He’s an ass.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Well, some men (ahem, losers) can’t handle a woman with power in sight of them so they devolve to the usual cliche sexist crap about her body pars.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Also, it’s stupid. Michelle is not over weight and her butt looks just fine.

Blackberry's avatar

Does anyone else want to know what Obama would say about this? Not as the president, but as a husband lol.

cockswain's avatar

I like the First Lady’s ass. I think she’s kind of hot.

digitalimpression's avatar

Gahahahahahaha

This is a news story? Wow.

marinelife's avatar

@digitalimpression He is a public figure who made a crude personal remark about another public figure. Of course, it is news.

JLeslie's avatar

Overheard? Meaning he was not saying it for public consumption. I would say he is an idiot for taking such a risk in this day and age. I also think oohing and ahing over Michelle Obama having great arms and looking great is ridiculously over the top. She is not very pretty, and she does not have a great body, she is very pear shaped. The media comments on her arms because that is her best feature. I realize part of it has to do with genetics of course, her body shape, and some people like large hips and thighs, but it certainly is not the current typical American ideal for body type. I think if the left let it rest about overboasting about her beauty, the right might chill a little too.

Meanwhile, I like that she is focused on health and better eating, so I am not fond of people when they criticize her for the focus she has put on the topic.

I don’t know what the senator being overweight has to do with anything, he is not lecturing anyone on health is he?

sinscriven's avatar

Silly whitey.

There is a difference between a fat ass, and DAT ASS.

(Not that i’ve checked it out or anything, just saying.)

WestRiverrat's avatar

This makes as much sense as attacking Palin because one of her children has Downs Syndrome.

JLeslie's avatar

Here is an old Q that is related, but not exactly the same topic, about Michelle Obama. It twists and turns a little and talks about her body. It just came to mind when I answered this question, thought some of you might be interested. Feel free to ignore it.

LuckyGuy's avatar

By the way, have you seen her arms? She can whip his ass any day of the week.

cockswain's avatar

Holy crap. She is not fat. This is the shape that particular woman’s body takes when it is in good shape.

I can’t believe some people still think an ass has to be small to be hot. Lots of different size and shape asses are hot. Michelle Obama is the hottest First Lady since Jackie O.

judochop's avatar

The first lady is in great shape. Can’t mock a woman for having a little back. That is what an inshape ass looks like.

cockswain's avatar

@judochop No doubt. Sensenbrenner doesn’t get it.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

You guys are no better than Sensenbrenner… Checking out the First Laiy’s ass. Shame on you. Who next… Her Majesty the Queen? For shame for shame.

ETpro's avatar

I think he clearly showed who the real bum is. He confidently took Republican dog-whistle racism too far. This one was too easy to read.

digitalimpression's avatar

@marinelife Not news to me. They do it all the time. What’s new? Booooorrrinnnnggg! But funny too.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

He’s going to apologize like it matters. What a turd.

Pandora's avatar

I think he’s an idiot. Your in public at a very public place and expect to have a childish conversation and have no one take notice of what you said. He’s definetly an idiot. Or he wanted to say this out loud as to humilate Mrs. Obama because he doesn’t like the health care issue stance she has and its costing him money he gets under the table for chosing companies that will provide shitty food to his states children.
Either way. A man with a double chin has no place to critize someone else who looks extremely fit compared to him. He looks like he’s 1 big mac away from a heart attack.
Won’t that show him. LOL

ETpro's avatar

@Pandora Let’s face facts. The far wrong-wing doesn’t like Obama because he’s an uppity black. If he’d play Step-N-Fetch-It to the wrong-wing, they would allow him to exist without any criticism. The racism in their base has driven the Republican party to insanity, doing things they were famed for avoiding, and fighting against things their brand was famed for supporting. Obama winning the Presidency is exposing their ugly underbelly. .

filmfann's avatar

Lord help me defend a Republican!

@JLeslie got it right.

He didn’t make this as a public statement. It was overheard.
Michele Obama is a very attractive woman, but she does have a wide load.
I am glad she has made proper diet her issue, and I don’t have a problem with it conflicting with the size of her butt. I realize this issue must bring her some heartache. I just hope she doesn’t drown her sorrows by raiding the White House freezer for all the Haagen-dazs.

filmfann's avatar

And let’s not forget this commercial

Berserker's avatar

These are the asshats who decide shit for us.

I lulzinate.

Also, Michelle Obama’s posterior; hot.

ETpro's avatar

@filmfann Are you suggesting that David Duke would be a fine Congressman if he’d just keep his KKK membership secret, or if he was only accidentally overheard talking about it. THe issue isn’t whether he meant for people to know that he says racist things, it is that he DOES say racist things.

plethora's avatar

Michelle Obama conducts herself with less dignity than any previous First Lady. No need to discuss the specifics. Part of her job is to bring dignity to the office and on this she fails miserably. In doing so she leaves her personal life, including the way she conducts her self personally wide open to others who want to poke fun at her. Having a big fat ass is a typical physical feature of Black women, especially big Black women. Comments come with the territory. Her butt is huge.

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^^^ I disagree. She’s in the spot light more than any other first lady, except Jackie K, so it’s much easier to pick her apart. Her butt is not “huge.” It’s just fine.

filmfann's avatar

@ETpro Two different things. How is this racist? He said she has a big butt. I know lots of people with big butts, and lots of them are white.
David Duke took a job representing his beliefs in bigotry and racism. This asshole hasn’t done that.

plethora's avatar

@filmfann Big butts can be found on White people and Black people. They tend to be found more frequently on Black women. Big butts are quite attractive to many men. Apparently Barack Obama is partial to that feature, since his wife certainly has one. There is nothing racist about noting the obvious whether Black or White. It was fine for the Congressman to so note, at least in my book.

filmfann's avatar

@plethora That is the position I took. I am not sure why you directed that at me.

plethora's avatar

@filmfann Im sorry. You are exactly right. I misread your post. My apologies to you….

JLeslie's avatar

@plethora Why less dignity? Maybe one specific just to enlighten me.

ETpro's avatar

@filmfann It’s common dog-whistle racism to crack jokes about black women having big butts. Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner was overheard twice joking about Michelle Obama, first at church and then talking loudly on his cellphone at the airport. He was making fun of her Let’s Move exercise program for kids. And while she’s a very shapely woman, the fact is she does not have an unusually large posterior. Here;is a picture of the First Lady side by side with the Congressman. I leave it to you to conclude whether this was or wasn’t a case of a rather corpulent pot calling a svelte and shapely kettle black.

I can’t possibly know whether the Congressman Sensenbrenner is a racist or not. That would require being able to look into his heart. But I do know what he said was racist, and he apologized for it because he knew it was not the conduct expected of a gentleman elected to Congress.

filmfann's avatar

@ETpro How about this picture ? I don’t think it was photoshopped.

plethora's avatar

@JLeslie Just one? Ok…bouncing off Air Force 1 in her tennipumps and short denim shorts. Flying on Air Force One is a remarkable honor and anyone who is awarded that honor is representing the United States and does not have the option of acting like she is on her own personal airplane just bopping around the country or the world. Appropriate dress still applies at State functions and flying on AF One is a State function, if for no other reason, you and I are paying for it.

This is all subject to personal opinion, of course, and not everyone (or anyone) has to agree with me. Doesnt change the fact that I think she acts in undignified ways (while holding a dignified position)......AND spending WAY more money on her own personal staff than any First Lady that ever lived. I think that’s pretty undignified too.

There ya go…two of them.

ETpro's avatar

@filmfann Not photoshopped? That image is from Sodahead.com. I participate on that site. It is a haven of hate for Obama and far wrong-wing nut jobs., Trust me, that’s Photoshopped. I’m a Web developer and pretty good at Photoshopping. Send me your rear view, and I can easily give you a posterior as big or small as you want. Here’s three unedited pictures of the First Lady from a fashion site selling her taste in clothing. Does she look that thick in any of the three? Would Jim Sensenbrenner like to pose alongside Michelle Obama and let us decide who has the big posterior?

Daniel Kahneman would say that system 2 was unable to keep system 1 in check. Normally a phenomenon of immature juveniles but some carry the problem into adulthood. Even congressmen it seems.

JLeslie's avatar

@plethora I gave you a GA because I welcome your opinion and appreciate your response. I would need to see this denim skirt and where she was landing. If it is back home in the US during an uneventful landing I probably would not mind. If it is landing during an official visit to a foreign country, I probably would care about how she was dressed also.

I have no idea about how much she pays her staff, but I will take your word for it for now. I don’t think this is a time for salary increases in the government. I would need the whole story though, is the total salary spending more, or does she have fewer personell at higher salaries? Is the total higher because those who care for and watch the two children are in her budget? It would be interesting to see the actual breakdown.

ETpro's avatar

@plethora Laura Bush had 10 paid staff members at a cost to taxpayers of $975,000 per year. Michelle Obama has 16 at a cost of $1.25 million per year. If you will pardon the pun, the “bottom” line iss that Laura Bush’s staff was less, and so did less. But they individually earned about $20,000 a year more than Michelle Obama’s staff members. I leave you to decide if that’s a hair-on-fire issue to Republicans. It certainly isn’t to me.

JLeslie's avatar

@ETpro Do you happen to know why, or what positions, were added for Mrs. Obama’s staff compared to Mrs. Bush’s?

ETpro's avatar

@JLeslie FactCheck doesn’t give a complete breakdown, but does explain what many of the staffers do, and also that quite a few of them make the list even though they are staff to the President because their title include “and First Lady” such as the White House Social Secretary.

It also notes that all the recent first ladies have had staffers doing work for them without specifically having the term “First Lady” in their job description, as the 16 staffers mentioned for Michelle Obama and the 10 mentioned for Laura Bush did. Reading it, Read down in the above link and you will see where reporter Lynn Sweet’s July 8th blog post in the Chicago Sun Times that sparked the controversy, which covered the First Lady’s staff and their salaries was picked up and distorted first by a wrong-wing Islamophobia hate site called TheLastCrusade.org—a site that now redirects to a list of porn, saying something about that hate group’s staying power. From there it was off and running, getting spun into ever greater levels of hate and bile by the WWNJs who seem to find it impossible not to puke in our ears constantly about how outrageous and horrible our President and First Lady are.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@plethora The issue of Michelle’s staff was addressed early, early on. I’m surprised you missed it. Here is the snopes article on it.

It’s just more Obama-bashing exaggeration.

AnonymousWoman's avatar

If that’s the worst he can say about her, she must be doing pretty good.

Personally, I don’t see anything wrong with her butt.
