Which PS3 games would you recommend?

Asked by Dr_C (14339points) December 27th, 2011

I am 31 and just got my first gaming console since the Sega Genesis way back in the early 90’s. I got the PS3 Uncharted 3 bundle for Christmas… along with MW3, the rest of the Uncharted Franchise and the Assassin’s Creed Franchise.

I have had the console for 2 full days and have already gone through MW3, the first installment of Uncharted (addicting btw), and am halfway through Uncharted 2.

I need help! At this rate I’m going to go through all my games before I get back to work on Jan 4th. Please suggest any games along the lines of the ones mentioned here.

Thanks!

Do you play on PSN? Playing online can make one game last for years.

If you like Modern Warfare, there are slews of similar games out there. I hear Battlefield 3 is excellent, although a lot of that is for the multiplayer aspect. Check out the Killzone series, perhaps. Socom 4, too.

You could always try out God of War 3, (or get the bundle on the PlayStation Network for GoW 1 and 2) Dante’s Inferno or Castlevania Lords of Shadow. Good adventure games. I might suggest Tomb Raider Underworld…but it’s got a crazy camera, and not so decent controls. I’m playing it now, it isn’t too bad if you get used to the flaws.

If you want games that last longer, you could check out some role playing games. Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls or White Knight Chronicles. Not exactly the genre you’re looking for, but if you try them out and get into them, you’re sure to be playing them a long time.

If you like playing online or collecting trophies, even the shortest game can be extended forever though. Also check out some downloadable games on the PSN Store. There’s so much stuff on there. One I could suggest is Trine, which is a 2D side scrolling game based on physics, where you switch between three different characters with their own abilities. Or Scott Pilgtim VS the World, which is a classic beat em up based on the graphic novel. The game is really fun, cute and charming. It’s one of those everyone can pick up and enjoy.

Here are some of the games I have that I couldn’t do without for the PS3.

3D Dot Game Heroes. A throwback/homage to the days of NES & classic Zelda titles. Very lengthy story to play through with lots of really tricky trophies to get. This game will last you a while. One of my favorite games for PS3. For $20, it is an incredible buy.

GTA IV: The Complete Edition. For $19.99, you get GTA IV, and both full sized expansions. The price is normally $60 for all 3. It’s a steal. You have to pick up in store though. If you know Rockstar & have played a GTA before, you know what you are getting. No explanation required. I love the series. Now with online multiplayer which is nice.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I’ve only just begun this game, but from what I have played so far… I love it. I’d say with your enjoyment of Uncharted & Assassin’s Creed, this game is great for you.

I’d say get a racing game to put into the mix. Every console needs a racing game, for when friends come over. I have a couple racing games.

ModNation Racers is like a VERY customizable Mario Kart. This game is on the PSN.. so buy it there. Having to change out discs to play games can get annoying. This racing game has a great single player mode & a wonderful online mode with more options. Creating your own tracks, character, & kart with the thousands of items/settings can be overwhelming, but a good way to waste an afternoon.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift There have been a couple sequels to this title, but I’ve stuck with this one. Great racing game that can be a bit tricky to get used to the handling, but once you settle in… tons of fun!!

Go to the PSN & download as many free demos as you can. You’ll find a lot of great stuff out there & you can discover some games you never thought you would enjoy.

Saints Row three. A much better version of grand theft auto.

Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena is excellent. Great story with triple A voice acting and the game is actually very good. It’s part shooter, part stealth part adventure. Highly recomend it.
Batman Arkham Asylum was another good adventure. Didn’t fancy it all but once I started it I did not stop till I had every trophy going.
Dead Space (and to a lesser extent it’s sequel) are also pretty enjoyable.

Wipeout is well worth downloading from PSN

Please listen to me and play heavy rain. I think you’re going to come back and thank me once you’re done with the game. Look it up :) Have fun!

These are all fantastic answers! Thank you all so much!

That all depends on what kind of games you like…

Shooters War? There’s way too many to list.

Puzzles? Portal 2.

Agility reflexes? Catherine.

RPG Swords and Sorcery? Skyrim.

RPG sci-fi. Mass Effect 2 & 3.

Horror and Gore? Dead Island.

I strongly recommend LittleBigPlanet, I loved the first one, as well as what little I’ve played of it’s sequel. I think it’s been mentioned, but the Killzone franchise is excellent as well. If you’re into RPG’s, Skyrim is the go-to, but I would also recommend Demon’s Souls. If you pick up Demon’s Souls, though, be warned; it is probably the single hardest game I’ve ever played, and I head it’s sequel, Dark Souls, is even harder.

I’m currently working my way through Skyrim and a regular dose of multiplayer Battlefield 3. But like @judochop said, if you haven’t shaken the 12 year old side of you yet, try Saints Row 3. It is complete and utter chaos, and it’s amazing.

Deus Ex is always a good bet.

Personally, I have always been fond of the Gran Turismo series as well.

Skyrim is good, but only slightly less addictive than crack.

Dude, get the latest Madden, MLB and learn how to control the systems controller before moving onto anything crazy.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@jerv no I think Skyrim has the edge over crack. And shame on who ever suggested it, the man says he has to be back at work on the 4th.

so in 3 days I’ve gone through MW3, Uncharted and Uncharted 2. Next up Uncharted 3 and the Assassin’s creed series. I’m thinking of picking up Deus Ex, Little Big Planet and Battlefield.

This has been a very enlightening thread! thank you all so much!

You should have fun with Little Big Planet. You create levels, or go through sets of levels, or levels that people made and put online. If you go through every single one that exists, you’re a hero. XD

HungryGuy's avatar

Oh, I should have added it to my list…if you have a group of friends, PAIN is a blast as a party game. It’s a game you can download from PSN.

My vote goes to God of War 3.
