Does it concern you that we are two heartbeats away from a President John Boenher>?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) December 28th, 2011

Imagine a bombing or attack at some event killing both President Obama and Vice President Biden. The third in line for the presidency would be Speaker of the House John Boehner. With his record of missteps and failures almost unbroken during his tenure as the Speaker, how confident would you feel about the nation’s future as he weepingly took the oath of office?

Considering that it is policy to not have the President and Vice President in the same place at once, I am not concerned at all.

He’s got way hay hay too much charisma for the job.

Ron_C's avatar

Actually, it probably wouldn’t be such a bad think. Boehner is a pragmatic, essentially conscience free politician. It would do him good to get out from under the thumb of the Tea baggers.

At least he has theatrical skills to rival Reagan’s. He can fake-cry on cue. Brilliant maneuver.

It doesn’t scare me any more than the upcoming election does. Which does scare me.

It turns my face orange just to think about it :-(

I don’t care. I don’t vote. Whatever happens happens. Out of my control. Voting is a waste of my time. Let someone else research the “issues”. Let someone else drive to the voting booth. Let someone else feel like their doing their civic duty. Let someone else decide. I’ll just learn about what might happen and plan accordingly.

Horrifying if I let myself think about it.

Nullo's avatar

Not really. The current guy’s had a barrel of gaffes himself. It’s a people problem.

Other than he is white, and experienced in Federal politics, how is he any any different than the current POTUS. They are all of them self absorbed, egotists, with a personally ambitious agenda. Nothing would change.

filmfann's avatar

This must be what Republicans felt when they realized Nancy Pelosi was in the same postion.

(dry heaves)

saint's avatar

@filmfann Apparently, she was more acceptable. Not sure why. But I guess she was.

The difference is Bush had life insurance. No sane individual would have shot Bush, knowing Cheney would become president. (shudders…)

@blueiiznh Good point. It would have to be a deliberate hit planned at two different points at one time. Tough to sneak past all the security. That’s comforting.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Ha! GA.

@Ron_C There are 62 members of the House in the Tea Party caucus. If the Speaker with a majority of the 435 member body falls “under the thumb” of the Tea Party,m then he can be steered about by a mighty small thumb.

@linguaphile Yes, a horrible outcome in the upcoming electins is a far more likely scenario.

@elbanditoroso I;m guessing having an orange face is not a good sign. :-)

@city_data_forum Are you ineligible to vote, or just uninterested? I would suggest that what happens in politics can matter a great deal, even to those not interested in it. Living under the Kim family ruling North Korea has kept the bulk of the nation in abject poverty for 64 years, leaving 6 million of their own people living in starvation poverty so the Kims and the party leaders and military brass can live in opulence in an extremely poor nation. I would say it makes a great deal of difference who leas, and in what direction.

@marinelife Yeah, sorry I brought it up. :-)

@Nullo I’ve had my share of disappointments with the current occupent of the White House, but he has done nothing even remotely close to the carnage things like the Ryan budget would bring. No comparison. IMNSHO.

@saint I reject the argument that all politicians are just alike. George Washington wna Adolph Hitler were both white as well. But they were so diametrically different in their leadership and agendas that I am baffled by how anyone can argue that all politicans are one and the same. They are all politicians, yes. It probably takes a pretty strong ego and sense of self confidence to step forward and ask to lead a natin, yes. But there, the similarities end.

@filmfann The Bush/Cheney threat having not led to them both being taken out, I can rest easier about any danger Obama and Biden would both meet an untimely end. :-)

GracieT's avatar

@ETpro, we can’t really be that flippant! Unfortunately there are crackpots out there now that may think that killing Obama and/or Biden is a good idea!

Nullo's avatar

I think it’s interesting how nobody really cared about the Bush death threats, but get all hairy because some guy wants Obama gone the messy way.

filmfann's avatar

@Nullo I am trying to remember when someone fired live rounds at the White House during the Bush administration.

ETpro's avatar

@GracieT True, but the more vocal they are, the quicker they are on the Secret Service’s radar.

@Nullo The Secret Service has never taken anyone’s death threats toward the President lightly. While I thought the Bush Presidency was a continum of monumental incompetence, I would have immediately turned in anyone I though posed a threat to his life. Assasination isn’t how we should settle our political differences in a democracy.

@filmfann Great point.

GracieT's avatar

@ETpro, not necessarily. Look at Giffords. It only takes one person, and the Secret Service is not perfect.

ETpro's avatar

@GracieT Nobody’s perfect. Fortunately that goes as much for assassins as it does for the security forces that try to foil their plots.

Ron_C's avatar

@ETpro ” he can be steered about by a mighty small thumb.” That’s true. Frankly, I don’t think he is a very good leader but there is a possibility that, if he gets away from that environment, he’ll get his balls back. Right now a small faction of very loud radicals have his balls tightly in their grasp.

Like I said before, people with no philosophical backbone and little or no integrity are easily lead and controlled. Maybe being 2011’s number one looser will teach him a lesson. I try to be optimistic.

ETpro's avatar

@Ron_C One can always hope. The odds don’t favor it, though. Look how much his own meltdown as Speaker taught Newt Gingrich.

Nullo's avatar

@ETpro At what point did I suggest that I favored assassination as a political tool?

Does it concern you that we are one heartbeat away from President Biden? That’s the scarier thought.

ETpro's avatar

@Nullo It does not concern me that we’re one heartbeat away for President Biden. It is by no means the same thought. To claim is is is to maintain that all people are exactly the same, for the rankest criminal and street bum to the most accomplished prodigy. Joe Boden and Jobn Bonner are as different as oil and water.

Ron_C's avatar

@ETpro and @Nullo I think that a president Biden could be real fun. He’s not afraid to try new things, he has some pretty good ideas concerning the Middle east, he’s modest and willing to consider other people’s opinions plus he really seems to care more about this county’s citizens than the power of international corporations. Anything would be better than Romney, Gingrich or Boehner.
