What are your thoughts about Tim Tebow?

Asked by whitetigress (3129points) December 29th, 2011

I must say although I’m a die hard San Diego Chargers fan. I’m going to have to root for the guy this weekend.

Should we know who this is?

Sanctimonious, self-centered jerk. Dude is the poster child for why people have such a problem with evangelical Christianity. Sooo glad I have 10 for Tebow.

I’ve been a die hard Broncos fan since 1987. It hasn’t been this exciting for us fans since Elway. Tebow loves the game and he’s helped energize the players. Since when does the defense stand on the sidelines and watch the quarterback play? They are usually sitting on the bench resting. I don’t care about his religion, I care about how he and the team play together and try to win.

I couldn’t think of a more fitting waste of thought.

I don’t really know who he is, just that lots of people seem to make fun of his overuse of prayer.

@ANef_is_Enuf @Kardamom @Michael_Huntington In case you didn’t know. He’s a gamer, he’s a baller, he’s a playmakr, and a shot caller. All he does is win.

He wins. The people he works with and for accept him for what he is, who am I to disagree with people that are much more intimate with him than I will ever be.

If his boss and his coworkers don’t mind about his praying, why should I?

@Michael_Huntington @Kardamom @ANef_is_Enuf Tim Tebow is the new(ish) quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Raised in Florida, he played for University of Florida and became the first college sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy. Many feel he’s a great player, while others feel he’s a total hack. He’s always been a controversial player due to his take on religion. During his time in college, he would paint biblical passages into his eye paint (John 3:16, etc). During last year’s Superbowl, he did a Focus on the Family ad with his mother, taking an extreme pro-life stance (no rape, incest, or health of the mother exceptions). He has been known to take trips overseas to circumcise little boys. Tebow has tended to be more public with his faith than almost all other football players, including frequent genuflecting and thanking of his Lord and Savior. Some love his public displays of religion, a few even asking if he’s the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, while others object to his putting his faith before his team and the game, and accuse him of proselytizing. Recently, there was an SNL sketch in which Jesus asked Tebow to “take it down a notch”.

@Aethelflaed What I don’t get is that people complain about Tebow when the NFL has a player accused of murder, and a player involved in pit bull dog fighting And let’s not forget O.J. Simpson. I’m sure I don’t need to link everyone to his lovely past.

How is Tebow not a better role model compared to those three?

The guy loves the game. Who cares if he also loves Jesus and is very vocal about it. It’s the media that is making a big deal about it. If a player thanked his family or spouse every time the media interviewed him, that would be ok. But he thanks the Lord and that’s got to be a problem? I’m agnostic and I really don’t care what the guy believes, but I’m not going to think any less of him because he is vocal with his beliefs.

@jonsblond Well, I personally have no love in any capacity for either Vick or Lewis (and I was 10 when OJ was on trial, so there’s no time in which he was the golden boy for me), so I can’t really speak as to why people are ok with those things. However, it does seem like they aren’t really comparable – Vick, Lewis, and OJ all claim to be role models in spite of those controversies, while Tebow claims to be a role model because of those controversies. And Tebow does seem really proselytizing to me – tons and tons of players include Jesus and God and their faith in their speech, but most aren’t taking out time in Superbowl ads to tell others why they should believe as they do. I don’t care what Tebow’s religion is. I do have some problems with Tebow being so public about his faith, when I really doubt if it was any other religion (especially Muslim), he would be ok with that. But it’s how he uses the game to proselytize to me that seems like he’s more about himself than the game or his teammates, and I think he cheapens the game by doing so.

@Aethelflaed No one would be talking about Tebow if he didn’t play well. He wouldn’t be the starting quarterback if he was that shitty of a player. Not everyone can agree, of course. And I know the guy has many haters.

He’s a young quarterback that is getting the job done for the Broncos (with the help of a great defense and running game). If he’s better for the team, and that’s all I care about, I don’t care what he does as long as it’s not rape, animal cruelty or murder. Players respect him and that’s all that matters. Get the Broncos to the Super Bowl. Beat the Packers again. (my husband is a lifelong Packers fan. That was a very exciting game to watch in our house.)

I would rather see him genuflect than the stupid, often lewd hump dances many of the players go through.

It’s one of those deals where if what the guy does bothers you, it is really your problem! no one except his team mates have to listen watch or otherwise engage with his behavior and they don’t seem to mind.

jonsblond's avatar

Simple answer: He’s an unconventional quarterback who helped bring the Broncos from the bottom of the AFC West to the top.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@rooeytoo I actually cannot go out to a bar with my friends without Tebow dominating both the tvs, without seeing people Tebowing every 15 minutes. He is really very much a media phenomenon right now; it’s not quite as simple as changing the channel on my own tv.

Religion is, and should continue to be a PERSONAL thing. Not a public thing. All of my thoughts about Tebow follow from that first statement.

As a football player: good, promising, but young and unseasoned. He may be the next Joe Namath, or he may implode like Michael Vick did. Too early to tell.

Charles's avatar

I think he was brainwashed as a child when his parents took him to church.

cockswain's avatar

I live in Denver. I think he is a massive douche on a personal level, and mostly a shitty QB until the last two minutes of the game. He’s not the next John Elway. He won’t even be the next Jake Plummer or Kyle Orton. I’m thinking Kordell Stewart.

Soupy's avatar

I don’t follow American football, so I don’t feel anything about his playing ability. To me he’s just another sporting jerk who thinks it’s acceptable to say that god is helping him win. I think it’s rather ridiculous to say that a god is taking the time out of his day to help you win a game, while no gods are out there helping the thousands of children dying of malaria. Do you worship a god who cares enough to help you throw a ball, but not enough to help dying children by mosquito nets?
