Don't you love going for a walk?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) December 30th, 2011

I find that it is so difficult to find anyone to go on walks with me, so most often it is just me and my dog. I can’t really understand that, I usually have terrible motivation to exercise, but I never say no to a nice, long walk.
Do you enjoy going for walks?
If you don’t, why don’t you?

I love going for walks! They’re so refreshing.

I have started walking a lot in the last few years. We have a reservoir n town with a path around it that is just under three miles. it’s a great way to get fresh air, a little exercise, and commune with nature. It seems to be new and different everyday, regardless of the weather.

Yes! Walks engage sight, sound, sniffer and we get in touch with our feelings. Literally or figuratively all senses are engaged. We step out and away from the detail and sometimes pettiness of our lives. Walks equalize all people in the context of opportunity to exercise, enjoy and experience a sense of freedom as the endorphins fire up and realize we are so much more than the lives we are living as we step along.

Why the heck don’t any of you live close enough to go for a walk with me? :\

comity's avatar

I wish I could walk with you @ANef but I don’t think I could keep up with you ; ) Every morning hubby and I and our three little dogs take a walk around the park. It’s about ¾ of a mile, not that long, but it’s such a picker upper for me. Love it!

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@comity no way, I love a nice stroll just as much as a long, brisk walk. I just enjoy the fresh air and the scenery. I prefer when it involves a bit of conversation, but that seems hard to come by.. and my dog is not a big talker. :)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf Give me 5 or 6 hours and I can be there.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe sounds good. I’ll make us lunch. ;)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf That sounds so good. You just made my day. :)

I swear I wanted to ask the same question! Thank you for doing so. I need my walks like the earth needs the sun! Seriously, I always find myself walking alone because no one feels like it. It’s just so peaceful and I get to think more about everything and the way I feel.
@ANef_is_Enuf A question? Would you rather walk at night or when the sun is around?

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Tbag I used to enjoy walking at night, but I have become a real wuss in recent years. I am inclined to blame a string of robberies that made me paranoid, although I don’t live in a bad neighborhood. Now I won’t go for a walk unless the sun is up…. but if I could find someone to go with me I would walk at night.
I get lost in my head when I walk alone, I completely lose track of time.

My favorite walk in the world: Up the bobsled course in Lake Placid. It’s a liitle ways outside the village, on Mount Van Hoevenberg and it’s a bitch of a climb, but it is so worth it.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe that sounds pretty. I am such a creature of habit. I always walk the same 3–4 mile route around my neighborhood. A few weeks ago I went for a walk with my neighbor and we switched up the route a little, and the two of us together are so pea-brained that, not only did we end up walking in circles a couple of times, but we also managed to get lost in our own neighborhood. Twice.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf It’s a great climb, and when you get to the top and look around, all you can see is forest covered mountains. As far as you can see. Plus you can stand next to the track and see the faces of the drivers as they come down the track. It’s a pretty hairy track and their eyes are huge when they come down the run. It’s cool.

My favorite walk is in Fillmore Glen State Park in the finger lakes with its gorges, water falls and hills (not too high) . Love it!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@comity You just took me back to Ithaca. The gorges are amazing. Just don’t try swiming under the suspension bridge in September.

comity's avatar

I read about some Cornell students jumping off the bridges. Why is that? Too much pressure?

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@comity It’s called Gorging Out. It’s a tough school.

Mariah's avatar

Hell yes, one of my least favorite things about winter is that walks become unpleasant and stop happening.

thorninmud's avatar

During the months when the weather isn’t lethal here, my wife and I stroll along the portion of the Lake Michigan shore that borders Northwestern University almost every evening. There are lots of people there, but I’ve noticed that very, very few Americans are doing what we’re doing: just strolling.

The strollers are almost invariably Europeans, cultures that still value strolling as a worthwhile activity in itself. Pretty much everyone else is dong some form of exercise (as evidenced by their “power walk” intensity), walking the dog, or some other purposeful activity. I wonder if the art of the purposeless stroll is being lost in our culture.

Yes, I love walks! I live near miles and miles of river trails in the hills out here, but, I enjoy wandering around my own property too, although it is not a vigorous walk, more like a stroll and stand. lol

I just came in from my morning hangout with the pets.

I take my coffee and go stand on the edge of the ravine off of my patio and watch the cats, and geese and sheep and horses milling around.

My one cat has her morning constitution which includes slinking through a little hole in the fence to get inside the goose corral and go hunting mice under their barn.

Myles, the newer guy and I just like to stand on the hill and watch the woods together. lol

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@thorninmud oh my goodness, I agree. We need to bring “strolling” back in style, because that is good stuff.

Coloma's avatar

Here, here! I second strolling as a great past time!
Makes me want to get a little parasol lol

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

Hey anti winter walking jellies, try snowshoes. You can go anywhere and it’s a heck of a good workout for the legs.

Mariah's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Hee, my problem is just that I hate being cold. I wish I wasn’t such a wimp because I love taking walks any other time of the year.

Walking around my little town is the best because there are a lot of outdoor cats and on any given walk (I usually go about 1.5 miles) I can often find upwards of three friendly cats to pet.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Mariah They make some pretty good clothing these days. Plus you could jump into a hot bath when you get done.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

Yes. It’s a great exercise when you’re pissed off/stressed. Do you guys go to a certain destination, or do you just…walk?

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I walk far less in the winter, as well. It isn’t so much the snow, but the cold air really agitates my asthma. I do walk, just less than I do in warmer months.

Mariah's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe I will probably learn to just suck it up when I go back to school and have to walk everywhere in the cold, haha.

@Michael_Huntington I have a particular route I usually walk, but I change it up if I feel like going farther or somewhere else.

Coloma's avatar

I live in mountain lion land so I don’t walk the river trails alone at dusk or dawn.

I HAVE, in the summer, and have had a few scares. I had a lion trailing me on a ridge one night a few summers ago. It was an exercise in meditation and keeping the fear vibes under the radar. I made it out of the woods just at dark and it was very mentally invigorating. lol

comity's avatar

@Coloma Mountain Lions! Whew! We now have Fisher Cats that we have to watch out for but Mountain Lions, wow!

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

We have squirrels. Nyah.

Coloma's avatar

@comity

Yes, I am not afraid, really, have encountered several over the years, but, we have had a fatal attack in our community and it is important to be aware. Personally I LOVE them, but, I also respect them tremendously.

downtide's avatar

I love going for walks (it’s one of the many wonderful things about owning a dog) but lately my knees have been giving me a lot of trouble so walking is quite painful for me at the moment.

Coloma's avatar

@downtide

That sucks, I have had some random knee thing going on too, for the first time ever, it’s a mystery. I joke about coming up lame, it’s the horse person in me. lol

comity's avatar

@downtide and @Coloma Does one of those knee braces you buy in the drug store help?

Coloma's avatar

@comity I don’t know, might trey it if it doesn’t get better soon.
It just flared up a few weeks ago.
I think I had been sitting cross legged at my computer too much, with the leg folded under me, and now my knee is popping and gives out at random.
I am hoping it is just a sprain from my contortions. haha
I have a weak left ankle, now my left knee is wacky…oh oh. haha

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@Coloma those things tend to be related, in my experience. I have mild scoliosis that was never treated, and as a result one of my hips is higher than the other. I was pretty young when I developed arthritis in that hip, and I broke my ankle on that side in my late teens. In the last year or so [I’m almost 30], my knee in that leg is starting to tighten up and give me a hard time. My doctor and a physical therapist both agreed that it is most likely directly related to my hips being misaligned.
I dread to think what it will be like 20 years from now, honestly.

I love walks, and I take them regularly. On weekdays I might not, but on weekends I always do. Big, long Sunday afternoon walks rock. I love going for walks at night too, especially in Autumn or Winter. It’s really peaceful, and allows me to unglitch my brain.

Coloma's avatar

—@ANef_is_Enuf
Bodies! lol

the_overthinker's avatar

I love going on walks too! It feels so nice just to walk around, get some air and enjoy the scenery!

It is actually difficult to find people to go on walks with me as well, unless they live a few blocks away from me.

Tbag's avatar

@Symbeline—“unglitch my brain”. That choice of words of yours is perfect.
I just came back from a night walk and I just wana let you know that I did think of you all walk lovers.

downtide's avatar

@comity a knee brace does help, and it also helps if I walk with a stick when it’s particularly bad.

comity's avatar

@downtide Glad you found something to help you.
