If we all agreed to stop saying "awesome", what word could we all agree to use as a replacement?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) December 30th, 2011

I have read a number of comments expressing disdain for the overuse of the word “Awesome”.

I am willing to change.

Can those in the collective help me identify a word or phrase that would be less grating and have the same utility? I would appreciate suggestions.

Oh my god, I am guilty of using “awesome” in place of other words because I can never think of the appropriate word to use and I hate it! I like “bitchin’” HAHAHAHAHAH! Thank you @city_data_forum

My vote is for KRYPTONIC. A friend once used that word (he’s older than me, maybe 30) and was like “you don’t remember when everybody used kryptonic to describe something that was cool?!” We were all like….No! Hahahahahhahahahahahhah! But I think it’s so funny.

I use awesome and I have noticed ‘cool’ a lot too!

I will throw in – fantabulous, splendid, splendiferous, magnificent, brilliant and glorious.

I don’t know guys. I just like awesome. I am really not sure why one word could be so offensive. Using anything else seems inconceivable. ;)

gailcalled

eg.: “The rims on that iroc-z are fucking gailcalled!”

@cprevite You are brilliant! What a gailcalled response! +10!

Somewhere in here we decided that the ur-synonym was to be uberbatman.

Might we include some similar original substitutes for the other overused-to-the-point-of-meaningless word-like word, lol?

Dog's avatar

“Uberbatman”
“Gailcalled”

^ NOW we are getting a nice selection of replacements!

“Solid.”
“Clutch.”
“Key.”
I, however, am not willing to change.

I worked with a woman who used to say, “that is the bomb,” when something was amazing. When she said it it was hysterical, everyone knew what she meant. Now, in post 9/11 America who knows how that will go over? I use it once in a blue moon at home, I still like it.

gailcalled's avatar

Remember the original definition?

From the dim past…“leaving the viewer or listener filled with awe.”

”...extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear:”

JLeslie's avatar

Stupendous.

The max. Fluther is just the max, yah know? Like, it’s really brilliant. ( “Like” – another overused word. )

Without awesome the world would in fact be….way less awesome thus never being replaced with a worthy opponent and creating way less cool shit in this world. It could…Be the demise of the human race. so not awesome.

@gailcalled I don’t understand your dislike for the word awesome being used as slang. In respects to the actual definition, the slang highly relates to it. Something being inspiring, amazing, filling someone with awe. Even if it’s some minor thing, it still respects the elements that construct the actual word. Say I read a book that left an impact on me, why can it not be awesome? Can I only say that word if God appears before me or something?
Granted, I’ve never heard anyone use the slang for something that really set fear or confusion into them, so I’ll suggest gnarly and tubular…although those words always remind me of sewers and haunted forests.

What does a chicken with a speech impediment say? “Fuck, fuck, fuck” all the day long. Makes finding a sub for Awesome pretty easy.

I’ve tried. I can not break myself of the awesome habit.

@Symbeline: I object only to the overuse; any word, when used too often, too thoughtlessly and too indiscriminately, means too many things and becomes banal and boring.

BANAL:

trite, hackneyed, clichéd, platitudinous, vapid, commonplace, ordinary, common, stock, conventional, stereotyped, overused, overdone, overworked, stale, worn out, timeworn, tired, threadbare, hoary, hack, unimaginative, humdrum, ho-hum, unoriginal, uninteresting, dull, trivial;
informal… old hat, corny, cornball, played out;

dated… dime-store;

rare.. truistic, bromidic.

Berserker's avatar

I didn’t know corny or corndog meant banal. I thought it was more along the lines of something being cheesy, sappy…granted, those words are pretty much just slangs themselves. Hmm, cheese. Gotta love platitudinous though. :D

gailcalled's avatar

It is “cornball” and not “corn dog.” I have no idea what that means.

Joker94's avatar

I do enjoy the phrase “Schwing!”, on a side note..

Kardamom's avatar

@Joker94 Ha Ha I like that one too. I was driving on the freeway last week and lo and behold I see one of those heavy equipment trucks that they use to pour cement when making buildings and the name of the company is called Schwing!

See one here

Joker94's avatar

@Kardamom That’s infinitely cooler than a truck just reading “Awesome”. Lol
