Emergency help, I can't light the candle?

Asked by Earthflag (549points) December 31st, 2011

Fire seems to scare me. I don’t understand how immense the fire is. I tried a lighter, and my finger almost burned. I tried other things and they create a huge flame that I get so scared. How can I light a candle? Is there a technique?

Use a match. Hold the candle at an angle close to parallel with the ground so that the wick is horizontal while lighting with a flame that will be vertical.

The flame was about 5 inches!!! And the match almost got all burnt after 2 seconds :S

Buy a box of wooden safety matches. They have longer handles.

Open one gas burner from your stove, light a long candle, walk to the other candles (with your long lighted candle), light the candles using the long one.

I use what @cazzie mentioned. You can probably adjust the flame height making it as low as possible. The long neck makes it easy to light candles even in tough spots.

Using a long-necked lighter like @cazzie linked to – they’re less than $5. Or long matches, but those cost more (per light).

I lighted it, but the candle stopped after 5 seconds. Is there a rule as candle has to be xx years old in order to work? Because my candles are very old.

Wax plus working wick = ageless.

I’d go for the 10 inch fireplace matches, a must have!

Haha..I just went through this last night trying t light an outdoor candle that hangs in a little glass holder in a Spruce tree on my patio by the hot tub.

I was very innovative, only having a lighter that burned my fingers, I pulled about 4 strands of long, dried, Zebra grass from my dormant plants and twisted them into a ‘fuse.’

Lit the end and the twist was long enough to light the candle without burning myself.

Try the Bic Luminere Lighter. It has a wand that can move to different angles. You can adjust it to bend it into the jar to light a candle. The level of the flame is also adjustable.

Use battery operated candles instead. Fire in the home isn’t particularly safe anyway, and much less so if you’re already intimidated by it.

if it’s lasting only a few seconds, the wic is short, and the wax around it will smother the fire as that wax melts.

Just remove some wax from around the wic, until you have a decent sized wic, and you should be ok (Of course you do this while the candle isn’t lit).

Buy a torch instead.

I light one end of a piece of dry spaghetti. I can use that to light other candles.

@gailcalled I knew there was something wrong with the way I spelled it . . .
