Do you run for fun?

Asked by shrubbery (10326points) May 19th, 2008

I know the science says that running releases endorphins that make you happy but still many people hate running and only do it when they have to or not at all. I am a recent convert to running for the sake of running and I do honestly enjoy it now, I used to hate it! I was just wondering what other peoples thoughts are!

I get the same effect from walking but never running. So I walk briskly.

I don’t run but I do walk fast everyday for about an hour each time. At the end of the day, I feel better and have more physical and mental energy the next day. I walk for the workout I can get, but I also do it for the fun of it, sometimes I happen to meet new interesting people. Walking or running is a way of life!!

I have yet to see a runner who has a smile on their face. It seems common to have a look of concentration or some kind of grimace. It certainly doesn’t look like they are having fun.

I signed up for a marathon once. I got up to the point where I was running 9+ miles and I realized how long it takes to run and how boring it was for me. I’d much rather play a game or sport that is fun that happens to involve running.

@pheonix, sometimes when I run over the bridge in my city on the homecoming down hill stretch I can’t help but smile, I love it! But I understand what you mean about the sports, I also play netball and lacrosse which involve a lot of running and they are more fun.
@joe, me too :P especially if something is troubling me because it makes me feel better

I love running! During the run I sometimes dont enjoy it, but afterwards I feel so proud. I haven’t been running as much because I’ve been rowing for a team. They both give great cardio, so I’m happy. I just love being able to do most things without exerting myself.

I totally love running and can be seen smiling, that is, unless I have to take a leak. I like to create my own obstacle course from logs and rocks or whatever else I can jump on. The fact that I have music blaring in my ears certainly doesn’t hinder my excitement level.

eambos's avatar

I often run trails and find myself jumping off trees, over logs, and on top of rocks :)

well, i too can be seen balancing on small objects in the city, not like parcour but just slowly being agile, aaah, i think im gonna run some laps tonight

Gotta throw in a little punch dancing and gymnastics!

Any physical exercise makes me feel great after I’ve finished. Its because of endorphins. :P

Just rode the bike 15mi and ran 5k early this morning. I feel great now… and am drinking plenty o’ water.

In the middle of all that though, yah, I probably had a look on my face that would’ve made oncoming pedestrians cross the street, had there been any.

i recently got back into baxing after a long break, so i have to work my cardio back up, so running is good. but only in the city, because when im in the countryside its so nice that i want to stop every tw seconds.

Since as exercise they are equal, it is walking all the way for me, because it is easier on the joints, and because it is one of the times I am unplugged from technology. I love trails through the woods or walks around our myriad lakes. I say whatever form of exercise you enjoy is the one you should do. Maybe I’ll pass you on a trail.

I love running I usually get up early in the morning ride the bike for about 30 mns and then run for about an hour it help me release all the stress I’ve put on.And yes it feels great after all the pain.

chaosrob's avatar

I run if there’s someone getting crazy with an axe, but that’s pretty much the level of incentive required.

loser's avatar

no. I’ve had fun before and that isn’t it.

dindinbaby's avatar

Depends on what I am running from

edmartin101's avatar

I was the same way as you guys, exercise wasn’t my cup of tea, but now due to some medical problems I really need to exercise and man! it makes such a big difference. I feel so good after a good workout. Then I just take a good fruit juice and vitamins and I am ready to take the day to a new level

Kills my knees. Can’t do it. Stationary bike is cool though.

amber's avatar

Yep. Love it. I feel happy when I run.

i love running. don’t misinterpret that “look of determination”. when i run, i push my body to its limits. every time i run, i go a little bit harder, a little bit further, a little bit more than i thought i could, and that makes me feel good in a way that goes beyond “fun”.

melanie81's avatar

Hate it. I don’t get it….if it hurts at any point, why do it?? It’s like, “Oh, let me go touch that hot stove…it’ll hurt like a bitch, but then it’ll feel soooo good afterward when I put ice on it.” wtf?

Seems like everyone ends up with injured knees and ankles eventually…but to each his own, I suppose. Personally, I like mixing it up a bit between kickboxing, spinning, the elliptical, long beach walks, and occasionally the treadmill.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@melanie81 – Not everyone gets hurt. Many studies have shown that runners actually have significantly fewer medical problems that are much less serious over their lifetime than the average population. Between having sore quads and diabetes, I’ll take the first one, please.

Personally, I think kickboxing hurts a hell of a lot more than running, but like you said, to each his own.

I hate running with a passion. Not so much because I am damn out of shape, but more because my face turns beet red with the slightest form of exercise. It really is a mood killer. I know I could feel so much better, too, if I tried it.

melanie81's avatar

@La_chica_gomela Good point…though I think generally being in shape could prevent diabetes and other medical problems. This could include using the elliptical, biking, taking gym classes…not just running.

I may give it a try again…it’s just such a bitch for the first couple of weeks when you have to stop after 30 seconds because you’re winded and hurting!

Jeremycw1's avatar

Running is the best! It’s all in the mindset: if you feel like you run because you have to, you probably won’t enjoy it. But if you do it for enjoyment, then it’s awesome! It’s also a little addicting… and healthy.
