it depends on how old the sister is… If she’s young a baby doll is the way to go, get her used to the idea then she will be excited to take care of a real baby.

How old is big sister? So thoughtful of you to remember her!

I was three when my baby brother was born – someone bought me a hot-pink t-shirt that said “I’m the BIG sister!” on it. I loved that t-shirt and wore it proudly till I outgrew it. I bet you can find something like that on the web- or make one using those retro fuzzy iron-on letters.

Also, don’t know if you are the mom or just a caring friend/relative (thank you, btw for thinking about the older kid!) but another great tip is for the parents to keep a grab-bag of gifts on hand…and whenever people show up with presents for the baby, if they have forgotten about the older sibling, the parents can give the big sibling a chance to pick a gift from the grab bag. That will make it exciting for the big sis when people come to see the new baby – rather than a source of jealousy. Also, it’s great to let guests know that they should go over to the big kid and play with her first – and only go visit with the baby after paying attention to the big sis. The baby doesn’t know whether or not you’re paying attention – but the big sis certainly does. Taking these simple steps can mitigate jealousy early on and pave the way for a good sibling relationship for years to come.
