One year old macbook pro for sale. Is it worth it for me to buy it?

Asked by ctferrarajr (270points) January 12th, 2012

Hey guys,

A buddy of mine is selling his macbook pro because he just got a new computer. There are no scratches or anything (I’ve seen it and I trust the guys). The specs are as follows:

15-inch, Early 2011
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
8GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
Running Mac OS X Lion

Also,
750GB internal hard drive
Hi-Res Glossy Display

He said he got it one month ago (I guess before the Late 2011 models came out) and paid $2,700 for it. He wants $1,500 but will probably take $1,400.

My question is:

Is this worth it? Or am I going to regret it once the new Macbook pros come out (whenever they do). Does anyone expect the new ones to be a major update or will that not be for a few year.

I know all of this is mostly opinion but at the least I want to see if others would buy it in case I decide to resell it.

Worth it?

Thanks in advanced!
Chris

ps. i currently have a 5 year old 13 inch macbook (mid 2007)

Also, I need a new computer for school so I will mostly likely be purchasing one sometime this summer, at the latest. And yes, it has to be a Mac. Personal preference (lets not get into it).

That seems a little steep for a 1-year-old laptop. Of course $2700 seems more than a little steep for a new laptop. At least it has a lot of RAM.

I’ve heard rumors that new Macbook Pros will have super high-resolution screens, which is a big thing for me personally. Another thing to consider: solid state drives (like on the MB Airs) are really cool. They speed up your experience quite a bit in unexpected ways. I know you can get an SSD on a Pro for $$$, but that computer doesn’t have one, and who knows if or how Apple will configure the next gen of Pros around SSDs.

I dunno, that’s a tough one. Do you need a powerhouse machine with a DVD drive? Because personally I’d rather spend slightly less money and get the cheapest 13inch Air.

@Qingu Yeah I need quite a bit of power as I need to run some engineering and AutoCAD programs, some of which might have to be run withen a virtual machine. I plan on getting a Pro regardless. I need the storage space and the power.

Are there any other big rumors though? Cause all that stuff can be upgraded (less the HR Screens). I think a comparable laptop new with the same specifications is going to be much more expensive, with minimal bonuses. The upgrade from Early to Late 2011 was very small and I can’t wait forever for this computer.

Well… it seems steep but not a ripoff to me, and in the grand scheme of things is probably a good price for a computer that will fit your needs/desires.

@Qingu Yeah it seemed a tad bit steep for me too but considering if you create a comparable model on the Apple website right now you’re looking at $2000. Its only one step (i would only consider is a half step) behind the newest macs.

Apple have updated the macbook pro twice a year since they first released it in 2006. I’d expect the next update around late March to early summer. If I were to guess at what they will update then I’d suggest they might switch to Intels Ivybridge CPU which is a die shrink of the current model and so expected to much more power effiiceint than the current model. They may update the graphics but of late as Apple seems to have been concentrating on increasing battery performance as opposed to computing perfomance (that’s not to say it’s not fast but that’s not what apple have been investing in). If you need a computer now then this is probably not worth waiting for. Compter tech changes rapidly and whatever you but today will be replaced with something better tomorrow.

As for buying your friends laptop, if you’re happy with the price and the condition of the laptop and it’s fit for what you need it for then you are saving $5–600 which is not to be sniffed at. Performance wise I doubt you would be able to tell the difference between the early and the late 2011 models and the early 2011 will still be able to hold its own against 2012 models so even if you did buy it I doubt you’d need to upgrade again fo a while.

Yes I think it’s worth it. If he really paid 2,700 and you could get it for 1,400, that’s a 1,300 slash off. A year of use for a Mac is practically nothing. Mine lasted 6 years after lots and lots of CD and DVD burnings.

Has he used his heavily? See if you could get some info on this.
