Can you think of any characters that have been invented lately that will last as long as Superman?

As much as it pains me to say it, the first I can think of is Hairy Plotter

James Bond

Ah, so I’m sure Indiana Jones is too far back also.

Indiana Jones

He was invented 31 years ago. Does that count?

edit: jinx @chyna ;)

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

I will take 31 years from the two sweet blond women.

1927

And really?

marinelife's avatar

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought Woah! Are they that old? Really?

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@marinelife yup. And I was looking at the most famous characters of all time, and apparently “The Spirit” was one of the most famous of all time, and he has completely disappeared from our culture.

Harry Potter, Tyler Durden, and Homer Simpson.

Frodo Baggins

^Frodo was 1937

Published in 1954, but created in 1937. Source

@chyna That’s what I was going to say, But Ian Fleming created his famous 007 character way back in 1953. So Bond pushes the 50 year requirement by a bit, but the next 125 years will have no more luck killing Bond than his encyclopedia of arch villans had had.

YARNLADY's avatar

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought @filmfann Oh darn, I overlooked the time limit.

My first thought was also Harry Potter.

Harry Potter for the win?! Anyone? No?...

Nullo's avatar

Darth Vader.

Jeruba's avatar

Would they have to be remembered by “everybody” in the same way that Sherlock Holmes and Superman are—part of the culture, in other words, with iconic status? There are always scholars and aficionados who perpetuate cultural memories that everyone else has forgotten.

And would you say that to qualify, they should be characters that “everyone” knows now? There are several nominated above that I can’t identify.

ragingloli's avatar

James Tiberius Kirk.

downtide's avatar

Kirk was invented well over 40 years ago and even the Star Wars characters are too old at 35 years. But Captain Picard would count.

For my suggestions I’ll vote for Harry Potter, The Simpsons and Hannibal Lecter.

LezboPirate's avatar

Hannibal Lecter is a good one. He is my choice number 2. Not because I like him less. Just because I hear less people talking about him on a regular basis. That Hannibal, he’s just so damn charming.

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@Jeruba I was curious about those characters who would be known by “everyone”. I suspect, that if a character has been nominated above and you don’t recognize them, they probably won’t last.

Nullo's avatar

@downtide I may be speaking blasphemy here, but Darth Vader was created in-story in Ep. III, which was made in 2005.

ragingloli's avatar

@Nullo
You mean ‘ruined’, not ‘created’

rebbel's avatar

Lara Croft

Nullo's avatar

@ragingloli I mean created, albeit poorly. The death of Anakin Skywalker proceeded into the manner related to me by a friend circa 1995 – “Anakin fights Obi Wan and falls in hot lava, which is why he needs his suit.”
I have no idea where he got that from (though I suspect an EU novel), just that it was well in advance of even Episode 1.

For what it’s worth Sherlock isn’t Sherlock without Watson. They are my OTP.
